There are but so many NFL running backs in the 2,000 yards in a season club, and Terrell Davis is one of them!
The Pro Football Hall of Famer and two-time Super Bowl champ joined Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. to discuss the value of the modern NFL running back as well as his beloved Georgia Bulldogs and what they need to do to rebound after falling short to the Alabama Crimson Tide last Saturday.
GoJo started the conversation off by asking Davis how he felt about his Bulldogs after their performance in a 41-34 loss to Alabama last week. Although the score shows that it was a close game, Alabama had to a commanding 21-0 lead in the first quarter, having all of us gamers watching wanting Georgia to hand over the sticks with the Bulldogs not having an answer to the Crimson Tide’s offensive onslaught. Davis responded with you know how it is when your alma mater has a rough day, playfully alluding to the Golics’ beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish losses to Texas A&M and upset to Northern Illinois to begin the season. He adds that the game just got away from Georgia in the first quarter and reveals that his team does have things to work on. Further, he mentions the benefit of the new 12-team college football playoff format and how teams don’t have to necessarily win their conference to get in, ultimately giving the Bulldogs enough time to turn things around.
As a follow-up, Senior asks Davis his impressions of the new 12-team playoff. He adds that he loves it and has always believed the old saying that if you lose one game, your season is done. Davis expresses that you are not the same team you were at the beginning of the season as at the end, and the expanded playoff gives teams outside of the Power 4 an opportunity to get in on the action. Davis, like all college football fans who love chaos, would love to see the current playoff format of 12 teams expand to 16 teams.
Moving on, the value of NFL running backs has been a topic of constant debate. With the NFL firmly planted in this pass-happy era and quarterback contracts soaring into the hundreds of millions of dollars, it begs the question: Is the modern NFL running back as valuable to a franchise as when Davis played in the 1990s?
Senior asks Davis about the value of running backs, who are, as he mentions, the next lowest regarding cap numbers outside of kickers. Davis’ initial response to the question was, “It didn’t go up much, did it?” He adds that they put a value and a number on the position that, in his opinion, is not fair to that position. Coaches don’t tend to run the ball like they used to, and it’s hard to get hired as a coach if you have a run-first gameplay. Franchises are favoring coaches who have a strong philosophy for throwing the football.
As Davis mentions, a key aspect of why we see this tendency is that the run game is expensive in terms of time. With the rules surrounding padded practices and hitting during the week, it’s hard to be efficient running the ball without those full-speed padded practices. He even alludes to his playing days and how, in practice, Mike Shannahan had the team repping the run game religiously.
