Three-time Super Bowl champion and former Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman joined GoJo and Golic to discuss the Patriots, concerns surrounding Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs, and what the Bengals need to do to turn their winless season around.
Mike Golic Jr. starts the conversation with Edelman by asking him if he were to go back to his playing days which of these scenarios he would believe first: Tom Brady being in the booth calling games or Danny Amendola being on Dancing With The Stars. Edelman admits that he would have never thought his former teammates would be doing what they are doing now. He jokingly says he didn’t think Danny could cut a rug, but he’s killing it right now. Further, he mentions how he was not surprised to see Brady becoming a broadcaster, given his love for the game.
TB12 has faced some criticism early on this season in his new role as a game analyst. However, Edelman reassured everyone that the same preparation Brady put into football as a player is the energy and effort he is putting into being an NFL analyst. He says he expects Brady to continue to get better and even expresses how he is already seeing him become more comfortable in the booth.
Edelman also weighs in on the NFL scoring decrease we’ve seen thus far this season. For the fifth straight season we’ve seen scoring drop and as a result, some critics have said we should ban the two-high safety look. Edelman attributes the decrease in scoring to a lack of practice and game-day reps going into a season. He adds that banning two-high safeties is stupid, and in fact, he thrived in that particular defense because it allowed him to find the holes in the zone.
As the famous quote goes, moving onto Cincinnati, GoJo asks Edelman if the Bengals’ winless start this year feels different, given their history of starting seasons slowly. Edelman says he doesn’t know if it feels any different and asks GoJo if it feels the same. He adds that you would have thought they would have done something differently in training camp to prevent their 0-3 start given past slow starts, but alas that seemingly wasn’t the case. Edelman says that the Bengals’ off-season issues are no different than any other NFL team has to face. However, he is hopeful they can turn things around with urgency.
Travis Kelce has been scrutinized for recording just eight receptions and 69 yards across three games. However, Edelman provides an encouraging outlook, asserting that Kelce is known for stepping up in crucial moments in December and January, particularly during the playoffs. Edelman emphasizes that Kelce has a proven track record of elevating his performance when it matters most, suggesting that fans can expect a turnaround as the season progresses.
It wouldn’t be right not to have Edelman on the show and not get his take on the current state of his former team, the New England Patriots, and its new head coach, his former teammate Jerod Mayo. Edelman believes Mayo has done well so far, especially given how tough a job it must be succeeding the legendary Bill Belichick. He also commends Mayo for his handling the Patriots’ quarterback situation despite the New England faithful wanting to see rookie Drake Maye under center. He believes Maye needs to learn by watching the veteran Jacoby Brissett, and, more importantly, the Patriots need to sure up their offensive line.
