With Week 4 set to kick off tonight, sports radio legend Christopher “Mad Dog” Russo joined Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. on Thursday’s edition of GoJo and Golic to discuss tonight’s Thursday Night Football matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants as well as some of the biggest storylines heading into this Sunday.
Before diving into NFL topics, Russo expressed his excitement about being on the show with GoJo and Senior. He can now relate to their father-son media dynamic thanks to face that he’s now on a similar path. Mad Dog revealed that his youngest son Colin recently started on the radio in West Palm Beach, Florida. Senior jokingly offered Mad Dog some advice, telling him not to expect to feel the love from his son right away. When GoJo entered the family business, Senior said he just started ripping him apart and not showing his media skills any love.
Getting into the football discussion, GoJo asks Mad Dog whether or not he has given up on the Cowboys, given their struggles stopping the run and rushing. Mad Dog says he has not given up on the Cowboys and that the NFC East division may not be as good as anticipated. The Eagles sneaked away with a win over the Saints and despite the Commanders playing well to start, Mad Dog is skeptical if Washington can sustain their early success. And the Giants are the Giants. Regarding the matchup tonight, Mad Dog said that Dallas owned the Giants, given the Giants’ losses against them last season. Ultimately, he believes this will be a competitive game tonight.
As a follow-up, Senior asks Russo which coach is in the hot seat between Giants head coach Brian Daboll and Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. Russo believes McCarthy is more on the hot seat than Daboll. Despite Jerry Jones tending to keep coaches around longer than most would expect, Russo points out that Jones cannot bring back McCarthy if he has another bad year and entertains the possibility of bringing Bill Belichick to Big D. It’s hard to predict what Jones will do. Still, Russo admits he would have fired McCarthy after last year’s embarrassing playoff defeat to the Green Bay Packers.
Mad Dog was also asked by Senior who was he more surprised by — the 0-3 Bengals or the 3-0 Steelers. For Mad Dog, it was the 0-3 Bengals. He stressed that it is not about the Bengals so much but rather more so who they lost to. They lost at home twice — once to Jacoby Brissett and once to an inexperienced young quarterback in Jayden Daniels. He said that you’d think the Bengals would have gone into their last game more motivated, given they were already 0-2 but alas that’s not what happened. On the other side, Russo noted how demanding the Steelers’ second-half schedule is, including a matchup against the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs. Regardless of their circumstances, Mad Dog believes the Bengals still have hope.
