It’s safe to say that Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. welcomed their most illustrious guest ever to GoJo and Golic on Friday, the King himself, LeBron James!
The 20-time NBA All-Star, three-time Olympic Gold Medalist and four-time NBA champion joined the Golics to talk basketball, playing with his son and even some football as part of LeBron’s partnership with DraftKings.
LeBron on his golden Olympic experience in Paris
LeBron is, of course, coming off a gold-medal summer with Team USA in Paris. LeBron said it was a super unique experience given that it had been 12 years since his last time on an Olympic court and because he was able to play alongside Steph Curry, Kevin Durant and his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis among others and for Steve Kerr along with his former coaches Erik Spoelstra and Ty Lue. The Avengers assembled and were able to bring home gold and represent the USA with the utmost red, white and blue respect.
Not only was LeBron a captain, but he also got to experience being the flag bearer at the Opening Ceremonies. Senior, being the HUGE Olympic fan that he is, had to ask about the awesome experience LeBron had in Paris. LeBron said he had seen so many different flag bearers and great athletes represent our country like that and the moment really hit him when Steph Curry announced in front of the team he had been selected. LeBron said to be at the front of that boat holding the flag was super surreal and gave him such a sense of pride. LeBron said that even in these divided times, in that moment everyone had one common goal and that was representing the Red, White and Blue and supporting all our amazing athletes. It was an unbelievable moment for LeBron, his family, friends and everyone else.
LeBron on playing with Steph Curry
What was it like for LeBron to see Steph Curry go through his first Olympic Games? LeBron said you could see every single moment, every single day that the onslaught and the avalanche was on its way and we saw it in the semifinal vs. Serbia and certainly in the final against France where Steph did what Steph does and put everybody to sleep. It was an unbelievable moment and LeBron was happy to be alongside Steph for them.
LeBron on being on Team USA with Anthony Edwards
Anthony Edwards, who could be up next as one of the potential faces of the NBA and basketball, was one of the breakout stars of the squad. LeBron said one of the best things about this team was the fact that it had a mix of vets such as himself, Steph, KD, AD and Jrue Holiday as well as the younger guys, like Ant-Man, Devin Booker and more. Ant-Man showed his excitement on and off the floor and was ready to compete against EVERYBODY, even the US ping pong squad. LeBron said to see that electric energy and to be around the young guys like Ant was a blessing for sure.
LeBron on playing in LA with Bronny
Looking ahead to the start of a new season with the Lakers, Senior asks how different will this year be given that J.J. Redick is now the head coach and Bronny James is on the team with his father. LeBron says looking at the Golics, it’s one of the greatest things in the world to work with your kid. He said this week they got into the gym and it was really the first time that he and Bronny on the floor as professionals together. LeBron admitted that he had a few moments where he lost focus, which is something he’s not used to, watching Bronny prepare and go after it. He thinks it is going to be an unbelievable year for himself and hopefully for Bronny as well. Although, as GoJo wonders, what exactly will Bronny call LeBron when they’re together out there on the court? As a matter of fact, LeBron says he has not said anything yet and LeBron has had his ears open to see how his son addresses him on the floor, waiting for that moment. LeBron knows it will come as some point and he doesn’t know if he is going to be surprised by it, in awe of it or something else, but he will be sure to report back to the Golics as a fellow father/son duo what it is that Bronny finally calls LeBron on the floor when it does come out.
LeBron on savoring the moment with Bronny
LeBron also added that playing with Bronny will give him a sense of enjoying the moment a little bit more. When you’re so engulfed in the preparation and the process, sometimes you can lose track of some of the things through the course of the season that you should celebrate or you could appreciate a little bit more. So with Bronny being with him on the Lakers, LeBron thinks he can have a moment of two where he sits back and can be more appreciative of just the moment itself. Because it doesn’t last forever, so LeBron says he has to stop and appreciate some more things and being out there alongside Bronny will help with that.
In addition to basketball, LeBron is a huge football fan. And he shared with the Golics his thoughts and picks for NFL Week 3, including who he likes as anytime TD scorers. You can check out his Week 3 picks here and his anytime TD scorers here.
