Tonight, we conclude Week 2 of the NFL season with a Monday Night Football matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Former NFL offensive lineman and member of the Pregame PowerUp crew Marshall Newhouse joined Monday’s edition of GoJo and Golic to discuss with Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr the key to success for both teams ahead of tonight’s showdown.
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins was one of the most talked about signings this past off-season, agreeing to a contract worth $180 million which included a $50 million signing bonus and $100 million guaranteed. The contract amount received much criticism, given that Cousins is coming off a season last year in which he tore his Achilles in Week 8. And going into this game, his career performance in primetime, and Monday Night Football in particular, leaves something to be desired.
Given his performance in Week 1, when the Falcons fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 18-10, Marshall believes Cousins doesn’t look right, despite reports that Cousins has been deemed “fully healthy.” Newhouse specifically states that the Falcons had to correct his footwork, as it was tipping off the Steelers’ defense and leading to them making key defensive stops.
Given the winning starts of their NFC South division counterparts, specifically the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints, both starting 2-0, Senior asked how long can the Falcons go with Cousins, especially with 2024 No. 8 overall pick Michael Penix Jr. waiting in the wings. Newhouse said that the success of the Bucs and Saints so far puts pressure on the Falcons to figure things out. Furthermore, suppose the Falcons play poorly in a stand-alone Monday night game. In that case, Newhouse believes the Falcons may start to consider letting their first-rounder Penix Jr. take the reins under center.
GoJo also asks Newhouse about the keys to victory for the Philadelphia Eagles, given that wide receiver AJ Brown is injured and unavailable. He believes that wide receiver DeVonta Smith will step up, and we should expect a heavy dosage of Saquon Barkley. Given the contact balance that Barkley runs with, Newhouse concedes that this will be a physical football game, and we will soon find out what this Falcons team is made of.
