Trey Wingo, the host of the new Pregame PowerUp on Mondays and Thursday at 6 p.m. ET on DraftKings Network, joined The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz on Wednesday to talk a little football.
After getting through Stugotz’s Top 5 places Bill Belichick could land next year, Dan asks Trey if he would agree that the 49ers have been the best team in football the last five years … it’s just that the Chiefs just have a better quarterback. Trey says, yes, he would agree that the 49ers roster top-to-bottom has been the best for a long time. But, with no offense intended to Brock Purdy, Patrick Mahomes is Patrick Mahomes and that dude is freakin’ magic. Furthermore, one of the coldest things Trey says he’s ever heard is Mahomes telling his family before the final game of the regular season last year that he had DECIDED the Chiefs were going to win the Super Bowl. He truly is the difference maker of all difference makers.
Moving on, how big a problem does the Bengals have when it comes to Ja’Marr Chase and his contract situation? Trey says he thinks it will get ugly quickly if the Bengals fall to Kansas City this weekend. He says it had felt like a new era in Cincy since Zac Taylor arrived, but with Chase holding out and Paul Brown going old school about in-season negotiations, it just reminded Trey of a conversation he had in the offseason with someone who he trusts who told him the vibe is not good. With all due credit to Jerod Mayo and the Pats, Trey says if you’re the Bengals you can’t have that team walk into your stadium and win Week 1. There are things in Cincinnati that aren’t sitting well right now, Trey says.
Meanwhile, in Sunday’s Dallas-Cleveland game, Trey found himself saying after the first half that one quarterback, Dak Prescott, looked like a guy who had earned his big-time contract while the other, Deshaun Watson, looked like a guy who never should have been given his big-time contract. Moreover, this is not a one-off for Watson, as Trey points out that ever since he arrived in Cleveland and served that 11-game suspension he has not come close to the player he was when he was with the Texans. Trey says there is a big problem in Cleveland as Watson’s cap hit for the next two seasons is $72 MILLION!!! There’s no way around it. Trey had a stat to back it up too — on Sunday Watson was 0-for-10 on throws of 15 yards or more down the field. That’s the worst percentage ever since they started keeping the Air Yards statistic in 2006. Watson is not getting it done right now and as he said in his piece here on DKNetwork.com, it is time for the Browns to consider playing Jameis Winston.
