Trey’s Take: Time for Cleveland to look at Jameis Winston

Updated:

Deshaun Watson has played terribly.

No matter what they do with that contract, he has a salary cap hit of $72 million in the 2025 and 2026 seasons. That contract is going to go down as the worst contract in the history of the NFL. It’s not even close. It’s the gold, silver and bronze medal-winner of the worst NFL contract — it sweeps the podium. That’s how bad that contract is.

You have a Cleveland team that has a really good defense and has some weapons. Their offensive line may have struggled against a good Dallas pass rush, but look at Watson’s numbers ever since he came off that 11-game suspension. He’s not even close to what he was in Houston, and the Browns gambled everything that he would be — and it’s about to backfire in their face.

They have to start thinking about Jameis Winston.

More AFC North troubles

Sunday was a great win for New England, don’t get me wrong, but that result was much more on Cincinnati. Joe Burrow was one of the worst quarterbacks on Sunday.

The Bengals are one of those teams that everybody says “they can challenge the Chiefs.” Well, they’re going to have to play a whole lot better in Week 2 to go into Arrowhead and beat the Chiefs.

What are expectations now, realistically, for Cincinnati? Especially if they fall to 0-2?

I get that they fell to 0-2 a couple years ago and made the playoffs, but I think that the head-scratching performance of the Cincinnati offense in Week 1 should have people really concerned.

If they fall to 0-2 with Ja’marr Chase’s contract situation hanging over everything, that is only going to make matters worse.

Can Green Bay survive?

The Packers just paid Jordan Love all this money on a team that’s really good. He could be out six weeks potentially, and their season could be over by the time he comes back. This is a team that had aspirations — Green Bay was -155 on DraftKings Sportsbook to make the playoffs and is now +180 following Love’s injury.

The Packers can survive if Malik Willis plays well, but he has never played well. When you sign a guy to be a backup, you’re saying to your team: “We’re OK with this guy for a few weeks if our main guy goes down.” I don’t think we can say that about Willis.
