Week 1 of the NFL season is off to an exhilarating start! Last night’s nail-biter between the Chiefs and Ravens was a thrilling kickoff, and tonight, we’re in for a treat with the Eagles facing the Packers in Brazil.
Peter Keating, host of Underdogs with Jordan Brenner, joined Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. on Friday’s edition of GoJo and Golic to discuss which underdog teams are worth watching as Week 1 unfolds.
Before revealing his picks, Keating critiqued the tendency of preseason predictions to be overly optimistic. He humorously noted that if you added all preseason win projections, the sum exceeds the number of wins possible in a season. Keating also highlighted the difficulty analysts face, especially athletes-turned-analysts, balancing talent evaluation with factors beyond a team’s control and how these external influences could impact their performance and shape a potential rebound this season.
Keating shares with the Golics that the Arizona Cardinals could outperform their projections this season. He supports his claim by highlighting the team’s injury struggles and tendency to lose winnable games last season. With the return of a healthy Kyler Murray at quarterback and the addition of rookie wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., Keating believes the Cardinals could easily win 7 or 8 games or more this year.
Keating also highlights the Carolina Panthers as another team which could show improvement this season. He explains that Carolina was heavily impacted by injuries last year, but with the addition of wide receiver Diontae Johnson and the benefit of playing their second season together, the group is poised to bounce back. Additionally, Keating points out that the overall quality of their division isn’t particularly strong, which could further boost the Panthers’ chances of success.
He also shared his other Week 1 underdog picks with the crew, including the Patriots at +8.5 against the Bengals, the Cardinals at +6.5 versus the Bills, and the Broncos at +6 against the Seahawks. When Senior asked which underdog stood out most, Keating circled back to the Cardinals’ matchup against the Bills. He pointed out that the Bills have lost key talent, especially among their top wide receivers, to free agency and will rely on less experienced players to step up on defense. Keating added that the pressure is on Buffalo, and a loss could trigger an uproar from their fans.
