Hideki Matsuyama withdraws from BMW Championship

Hideki Matsuyama withdraws from BMW Championship

After winning last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, Hideki Matsuyama ($10,500; 26.0 FPTS) got off to a strong start this week at Castle Pines Golf Club. However, on Friday, he was forced to withdraw before the beginning of Round 2.

Matsuyama birdied three of the first four holes in his round yesterday and added three more birdies on the back nine along with just one bogey. His 67 was good enough for solo second behind Keegan Bradley ($7,000).

Mastuyama’s withdrawal is especially brutal for the 8.14% of entries that included him in their lineup in the PGA TOUR $800K Summer Sand Trap contest on DraftKings. Since this is a no-cut event, those lineups will have a lot to overcome after getting zero fantasy points from Matsuyama in Round 2, Round 3 and Round 4.

With Matsuyama withdrawing, the odds on DraftKings Sportsbook are fluid. Currently Xander Schauffele (+400) is the favorite to win after his strong opening round.

Looking ahead, Matsuyama began the week No. 3 in the FedExCup Standings and will qualify for next week’s TOUR Championship, where the top 30 in the FedExCup Standings will play for the FedExCup Trophy. Whether he’ll be able to play or not based on his health, remains to be seen. If he does not play, he will not be replaced in the field, leaving 29 players teeing it up at East Lake.
