Who tops GoJo & Golic’s Heisman Trophy rankings?

In the latest edition of GoJo and Golic, Mike Golic Sr. and Mike Golic Jr. discussed their top Heisman Trophy candidates heading into the 2024 college football season.

To say that this is the most anticipated college football season yet would be an understatement. New caveats, such as the 12-team college football playoff and conference realignment, will keep college football fans on the edge of their seats all season long. So will the Heisman Trophy race, and the guys shared their top Heisman candidates heading into the 2024 season.

Both GoJo and Senior have Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel as their leading candidate to win the Heisman. Gabriel is the favorite on DraftKings Sportsbook with +750 odds to win the award. Both Golics have the Oregon QB at the top of their rankings, while Senior says it’s right for Gabriel to be the favorite going into the season given that he should put up big numbers in Oregon’s offense in the new look Big Ten.

The guys included other quarterbacks such as Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers (+1000 odds), Georgia’s Carson Beck (+800 odds) and Alabama’s Jalen Milroe (+1400 odds). It was the non quarterback selections where the guys had a difference of opinion. GoJo gave a nod to Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon (+7500 odds), while Senior chose to add Colorado’s Travis Hunter (+5000 odds). Hunter is best known for his ability to play both sides of the ball as a defensive back and receiver, reminiscent of the last defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy, Michigan’s Charles Woodson.

Senior expressed his view that the Heisman Trophy is starting to become more like the NFL MVP in that the award is becoming more and more quarterback focused. After all, seven of the last eight winners have been signal callers, with only DeVonta Smith bucking that trend in 2020. Senior says that he understands that the quarterback position is the most important position on the field. However, with Senior speaking from his history of playing on the defensive side of the ball, he would love to see more defensive players get some love in the Heisman conversation. The last defensive player that was selected as a Heisman Trophy finalist was former Ohio State Buckeye Chase Young in 2019.

With the current crop of Heisman contenders being mostly quarterbacks, it remains to be seen when, or even if, we will ever get another Heisman Trophy winner on the defensive side of the ball.
