College football season is almost upon us, and we’re hyped!
South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer joined Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. to discuss the Gamecocks’ upcoming season. Beamer told GoJo and Senior that he likes the group South Carolina will have to take the field this fall and that, like everyone else in the country, they’re ready for the real games to get underway.
With the college football transfer portal being a hot commodity, Beamer also explained how he and the coaching staff have helped newcomers acclimate to being a Gamecock.
Coach Beamer told the guys that, similar to how the NFL has its Rookie talent shows, the Gamecocks have a newcomer talent show where freshmen and even transfers take part. However, unlike most years, the Gamecocks had 40-plus acts performing. However, for all the excitement generated amongst the new faces on the team, a significant amount of time and diligence has to go into making sure players are aware of little things, such as where to go at the end of a series or the beginning of halftime.
For an NFL franchise, those operational procedures would get addressed during preseason; however, there is no preseason in college football, yet teams have a finite amount of time to iron out the most granular details. New additions like microphones in helmets and iPads on the sidelines are just some of the latest communication additions that will be featured in college football this season. Ultimately, this has pushed Beamer and the rest of the Gamecocks coaching staff to simulate game-like environments to ensure they are prepared to compete in the new-look SEC.
Beamer also shared his approach to constructing this revamped South Carolina Gamecocks roster with GoJo and Golic. Despite the challenges of team turnover, Beamer and his staff have excelled in recruiting and retaining talent. His last two recruiting classes have been the highest-rated for the Gamecocks since the early 2010s. This will be reflected in that there will be a true freshman playing meaningful snaps for the Gamecocks outside of quarterback and defensive tackle.
The South Carolina Gamecocks have yet to name a quarterback starter this upcoming season. There has been an active camp battle between LaNorris Sellers and transfer Robbie Ashford. The Gamecocks have +12000 odds on DraftKings Sportsbook to win the SEC title and +2200 odds on DraftKings Sportsbook to make the College Football Playoffs. The Gamecocks open the season against Old Dominion, where they are favorited on DraftKings Sportsbook by 20.
