The PGA TOUR has reached the FedEx Cup Playoffs! After a sprint to the finish at the Wyndham Championship, the final standings are in place and the top golfers on the PGA TOUR will step back into the spotlight for what should be an exciting postseason.
When Matt Kuchar finished up his round on Monday morning, the top 70 were officially set. Frenchman Victor Perez moved up to the No. 70 spot in the rankings and was the only player to move from outside the top 70 to inside the playoffs on the final weekend.
While Perez will be eligible to play this week, Davis Riley missed the playoffs by just one spot. Kuchar’s streak of 17 straight FedExCup playoff appearances ended even though he played well at the Wyndham. Other notable names to miss the playoffs include Lucas Glover, Luke List, Kieth Mitchell and Rickie Fowler. Players finishing outside the top 70 will not play in the playoffs, but many will play in the FedExCup Fall in September through November to try and secure fully exempt status for next season by finishing in the top 125 of the standings after The RSM Classic in November.
Since the PGA TOUR continues to tweak and adjust the playoff format each year, here’s a quick rundown of what to expect. This week the top 70 in the FedExCup standings will tee it up at the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind. Like the Signature Events this season, this event will have no cut and all 70 players will play four rounds, barring injury or withdrawal.
The top 50 in the FedExCup Standings after the FedEx St. Jude will advance to the BMW Championship, which will be held this year at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado. The top 50 also earn exempt status for next year’s Signature Events, which is a huge deal for players looking to climb the ranks and compete for bigger purses.
After the BMW, the top 30 golfers go right to the TOUR Championship, scheduled to take place August 29 to September 1 at East Lake Golf Club. For that final event, players are awarded “Starting Strokes” based on their standings coming into the final event. From those starting points, the tournament proceeds as normal with four rounds over four days. The payout for this year’s FedExCup Champion is massive at $25 million from a total prize pool of $100 million across the Playoffs.
The path to that huge payday starts this week in Memphis at the St. Jude, where Scottie Scheffler is the favorite at +360 on DraftKings Sportsbook. Xander Schauffele, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay and Ludvig Aberg have the next five shortest odds, while defending FedExCup Champion Viktor Hovland is at +3000 to win this week. Last year, Hovland won the BMW and the TOUR Championship in back-to-back weeks to secure his status as FedExCup Champion.
