The U.S. Women’s National Team faced a tough opponent in Brazil in the Gold Medal match, but the team was able to pull out a hard-fought 1-0 victory. It was the first gold medal for the United States in Women’s Soccer since 2012 after they failed to medal in 2016 and won bronze in Tokyo.
The victory completes an impressive turnaround for the program after a disappointing round-of-16 exit at the 2023 World Cup just over a year ago. New coach Emma Hayes remains unbeaten in 10 matches (9-0-1), and the U.S. won the match which it entered as -120 favorites to win on DraftKings Sportsbook.
The only goal of the game came on this score from Mallory Swanson, who was +600 to be the first scorer, +600 to be the last scorer and +260 to be an anytime scorer coming into the match.
Swanson, whose husband is Dansby Swanson of the Chicago Cubs, recovered from a torn patella tendon, had three surgeries and was forced to miss the World Cup. She established herself as a star in these Olympics as part of the “Triple Espresso” core of this team and finished the tournament with four goals and an assist. Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman each scored three goals as well but were not able to find the back of the net in this contest.
Brazil continued to push to the finish requiring some great saves from goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, another new face for fans of U.S. Soccer from this Olympics.
The U.S. will look to claim another gold medal in a major team competition later today when the Men’s National Basketball team faces the home country France in the Gold Medal game.
