Following a one-week hiatus due to the Olympics, the PGA TOUR season resumes this week with the Wyndham Championship. This event will be played at Sedgefield Country Club (par 70, 7,131 yards, Bermuda greens) in Greensboro, North Carolina, which has been the home of the Wyndham Championship since 2008. Lucas Glover won this tournament a year ago at -20, which was two shots clear of the field and the first of back-to-back victories for the veteran. The Wyndham Championship is hosting a full field of 156 golfers this week and there will be a normal top-65 and ties cut after the first two rounds. Also, it is important to note that this is the final event before the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin with the FedEx St. Jude Championship next week. Only the top-70 players in FedEx Cup points following the Wyndham Championship will qualify for the FedEx St. Jude Championship, so targeting golfers at the Wyndham Championship who need to gain points to move into or stay inside that top-70 bubble is a sharp call.
Sedgefield CC was designed by Donald Ross and is a tree-lined course that features narrow fairways, thick rough, 56 bunkers and water in play on six holes. Being long isn’t necessary at Sedgefield and finding the fairway has been crucial for success at this less-than-driver course. Glover led his field in fairways found during his win at Sedgefield last season and four of the past victors at this par 70 have finished the event top-five in driving accuracy. More importantly, being dialed in with your irons and sticking as many greens as possible is essential for winning at Sedgefield. Glover also led his field in SG APP during his Wyndham Championship win a year ago, making him the third victor of this tournament over the last five years to finish the event top-five in the metric.
With Sedgefield CC being a traditional par 70 with 12 par fours, scoring well on the par fours is critical at this venue, specifically the 400-450-yard par fours, with eight of the 12 par fours at Sedgefield falling in this range. Including Glover last year, three of the past five Wyndham Championship winners have led their fields in par-four efficiency at Sedgefield.
Below, I have featured four of my favorite DraftKings bargain plays for the Wyndham Championship, which all cost less than $7.5K.
Adam Svensson ($7,400) – Svensson is a very safe choice this week. The veteran finished T7th at last year’s Wyndham Championship and he has never missed a cut at Sedgefield in three starts at the par 70. Svensson is also in compelling form, advancing to the weekend in 13 of his last 15 starts, with three top-30 finishes during this span. The Canadian ranks top-12 in both SG APP and 400-450-yard par four efficiency when we compare this field’s last 50 rounds and is extremely underpriced for his chances of making the cut at Sedgefield this week.
Patrick Fishburn ($7,200) – Fishburn is playing terrific golf right now and he should produce a quality finish in his Wyndham Championship debut. The 32-year-old has finished 15th, third and T6th in his last three starts, with that latter finish coming at the 3M Open, where Fishburn gained strokes in every major category in his first attempt at TPC Twin Cities. Fishburn has shot under par in 11 of his last 12 rounds and he has carded a top-25 finish in seven of his past 10 starts, including a T25 at Detroit Golf Club for the Rocket Mortgage Classic, which like Sedgefield, is a Ross-designed track. Fishburn has moved himself up 111 spots in the world golf rankings since the start of the season to a career-best No.162 and is far too cheap for his outstanding form.
J.J. Spaun ($7,200) – Spaun has made five cuts in a row and four of these finishes have impressively come inside the top-30, including a T9 at the 3M Open in his most recent start. The reason for Spaun’s success has been his incredible ball striking, with the 33-year-old gaining strokes on approach at 10 straight tournaments. In fact, Spaun has exploded for at least 4.3 strokes on approach in four consecutive starts and he ranks fifth in SG APP when we compare this field’s last 24 rounds. While Spaun has been hit-or-miss at Sedgefield, with a 3-for-6 record in terms of made cuts, he is in too strong of form to ignore and is one of the best values available for the Wyndham Championship.
Gary Woodland ($6,600) – Woodland has had a lackluster season by his standards, but the former U.S. Open champion’s game has come alive recently, with him making three consecutive cuts and seven of his last 10 overall. His last start was a T37 at the 3M Open and during this finish, Woodland had a brilliant showing as a ball striker, gaining 8.5 strokes on approach at TPC Twin Cities, which ranked second for the tournament and is the most he has gained in the category in over a year. If Woodland can in anyway replicate this ball-striking performance at Sedgefield, he should generate a solid finish this weekend and outperform this cheap salary with ease. At last year’s Wyndham Championship, Woodland finished T27th. As an added bonus, the 40-year-old is almost guaranteed to come with little ownership in GPPs. In 20 starts this season, Woodland has yet to be owned by over 5% of the field in DraftKings’ main GPP of the week.
