Injuries have taken a toll on the Orioles starting rotation this season. They already made one move to bolster the unit, acquiring Zach Eflin from the Rays. They aren’t stopping there, though. Before Tuesday’s trade deadline, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com has reported that the Orioles are acquiring Trevor Rogers from the Marlins for second baseman Connor Norby and outfielder Kyle Stowers.
Rogers has been one of the few healthy starters for the Marlins this season, logging 105 1/3 innings. While he has been healthy, the results haven’t been great. He has a 4.53 ERA that is backed by a 4.42 FIP. His 1.53 WHIP is on pace to be the highest mark of his career. His strikeout rate has even fallen to 18.0%, which is well below his career mark of 23.8%.
Some concerning underlying stats with Rogers are that he has given up an 8.9% barrel rate and a 43.5% hard-hit rate. Both of those marks are on pace to be the highest marks of his career. Still, the Orioles just need someone who can eat innings at the back of their rotation, which Rogers can certainly do while at least giving them a chance to win games.
The Marlins get an interesting return in Norby and Stowers. Last season, Norby produced a .193 ISO and a .370 wOBA at Triple-A. He has been even better this season with a .222 ISO and a .398 wOBA at the level. He and shortstop Xavier Edwards could handle the middle infield for the Marlins for years to come.
Stowers has hit for power in the minors, slugging .544 at Triple-A this year. However, he has shown contact issues during his brief time in the majors, posting a career 32.1% strikeout rate across 67 games.
The Orioles, who are +125 to win the AL East on DraftKings Sportsbook, entered Tuesday half a game ahead of the Yankees in the division. The addition of Rogers might not be a huge splash, but it should help them remain competitive in games not started by Corbin Burnes, Grayson Rodriguez and Eflin.
