The Diamondbacks had a comeback victory over the Nationals on Monday, but it wasn’t all good news. Christian Walker left the game with an oblique injury and was replaced in the lineup by Kevin Newman. According to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM, Walker is now headed for a stint on the injured list.
Walker has launched 23 home runs this season, which had put him on pace to record at least 30 home runs for the third straight year. His 14.7% barrel rate and 46.4% hard-hit rate are both on pace to be among the best marks of his career. He was also already at 71 RBI, which had given him a favorable opportunity to reach at least 100 RBI for the second straight season.
The Diamondbacks moved quickly to address Walker’s injury, acquiring Josh Bell in a deal with the Marlins. While Bell doesn’t have the power that Walker does, he has slugged 14 home runs on his way to a .156 ISO this season. The downside is that he has just a .305 wOBA, compared to Walker’s .348 wOBA.
The Diamondbacks are currently -110 to make the playoffs on DraftKings Sportsbook. Being without Walker for any stretch of time is a significant blow, but bringing in Bell could help the Diamondbacks stay afloat until Walker is able to return.
