Ryan Reynolds has done some miraculous work getting Deadpool to this point, never mind giving us Hugh Jackman as Wolverine (at least) one more time.
Despite first appearing as Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a lot of Reynolds’ success with the role came in spite of that movie. The character was butchered in a few ways, but the star made sure to do the comic book misfit justice once he got his own movie.
Speaking of the comics, we did a breakdown of a Wolverine story that could play a role in Deadpool & Wolverine. But, there’s a much more obvious Wade Wilson story that fits even better in Wade Wilson’s MCU debut: Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe.
So nice, he did it twice!
You read that correctly. Deadpool has taken out the Marvel Universe not once, but twice!
The madness began in the summer of 2012 with writer Cullen Bunn and artist Dalibor Talajić — a creative team that specializes in horror. In a prior conversation I had with Bunn, he expressed that Marvel approached him with a title but nothing more.
“I sat down and said, ‘This is what the story is: It’s Deadpool if Deadpool was Jason Voorhees, and he’s killing everybody that everybody loves in the most horrible ways.’ Then I just embraced it and went for it.” the Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe writer said. “It’s a dark story. It’s a humorous story, sure, but it’s a mean, mean story.”
That four-issue event turned into Marvel’s best-selling book for a long time. So much so that Bunn and Talajić ran it back in 2017 with Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again.
Why the story makes sense for Deadpool & Wolverine
Well, for starters, the writer of the hit series said in the aforementioned conversation, “It’s absolutely how (the MCU) should integrate Deadpool.”
On top of what Bunn had to say, this is a R-rated film that features a bunch of characters who are completely expendable. The only actors from the Fox Marvel movies who seem to have any chance of migrating over to the MCU are Reynolds, Jackman and Dafne Keen.
Marvel has everyone’s attention with this film. Maybe if this were rated PG-13, leaning on Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe would be tougher to do. But this is R, just like the Fox Deadpool films. Factor that in with character expendability and the success of the actual comic book, and it seems like a no-brainer to effectively turn Deadpool & Wolverine into Deadpool & Wolverine Kill the Fox Marvel Universe.
