Where were Caitlin Clark’s teammates amid dustup with Chennedy Carter?

The Chicago Sky-Indiana Fever was the WNBA’s marquee game over the weekend. But it wasn’t because of the anticipated latest chapter in the rivalry between Chicago’s Angel Reese and Indiana’s Caitlin Clark. No, it drew attention because of physical play from Chennedy Carter toward Clark in the third quarter of the eventual Indiana win.

After the game, Carter refused to take any questions on the Clark incident, instead posting her thoughts on social media. Carter’s head coach Teresa Weatherspoon came out on Monday with a statement admitting it “was not appropriate.” Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. shared their thoughts on Monday’s GoJo and Golic.

Senior starts by asking where Caitlin’s teammates were in all of this? He acknowledges that Caitlin is no saint on the floor either, given her proclivity for throwing elbows, so he’s not going to go nuts on the Carter. Does he think it was a non-basketball play? Yes. Did it deserve to get upgraded to a flagrant foul? Yes. But his real issue is where were Clark’s teammates to defend the star player. He says someone had to get in Carter’s face and even make sure she felt the heat the next time she went into the paint. At the end of the day, he says you have to defend your teammate. He brings it back to his familiar territory of the football field, noting that if somebody touches the QB in the wrong way the offensive linemen better be looking to step in and do something otherwise there’s going to be problems.

GoJo also thinks the Fever players could have done more to protect Clark. Aliyah Boston was right there and as one of the Fever’s bigs, GoJo says she needed to be right there getting in Carter’s face. GoJo says one of the first things you’re taught as an offensive lineman is if a QB or RB is down on the field, you’re there to help them up. QB, RB or WR down near the other team’s sideline? GoJo says the offensive line is there offering them an escort back home to safety. He says you can’t have people messing with the star like that without any repercussions.

He knows the Fever players’ heads are spinning amidst a tough start to the season, including Clark. But he says at some point you need to focus on the things you can control and while he’s not looking to start brawls he does think the Fever have to go out and make sure their opponents know it’s not going to be this easy to push them around.
