The 2024 PGA Championship tees off from Valhalla Golf Course in Louisville, Kentucky on Thursday, May 16. Masters winner Scottie Scheffler enters as the favorite this week, installed at +450. Bryson DeChambeau vs. Xander Schauffele, R1 (+114)
Schauffele may be entering as one of the favorites to win, but if you look at his performance in these big events, he often ranks in the top five or top 10 as a noncompetitive finisher. Schauffele is able to consistently perform well enough over four days to make the cut and get his name on the leaderboard, but realistically, he rarely has a shot at winning these events. We can expect DeChambeau to come out swinging, as he did at the Masters. The longest driver in the game shot a 65 in the first round at Augusta, and while he ran out of steam over the weekend, I like a solid start from the LIV golfer here.
Justin Thomas vs. Viktor Hovland, R1 (-105)
Thomas has been quietly inching his way up the rankings, and recovered from a few bad putting performance with success on the greens at the RBC Heritage, where he finished fifth. Thomas may not be able to sustain his best levels through the entire tournament, but Hovland has been seriously struggling as of late. He has just one top 20 finish under his belt in 2024, so the odds here are solid for Thomas to outdo Hovland in Round 1.
Wyndham Clark vs. Justin Thomas, final score (-120)
Clark’s name is not often discussed among the top golfers of the moment, but in reality, he ranks fourth in the Official World Golf Rankings and has the potential to be a legitimate contender into the weekend. After Clark’s first major win at the U.S. Open in 2023, he grabbed a third place finish at the TOUR Championship, a win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and a T2 at THE PLAYERS Championship. While Thomas has been seeing something of a resurgence as of late, he has been far less consistent than Clark.
Max Homa vs. Collin Morikawa, final score (+115)
Both Homa and Morikawa were in the running for the Masters title heading into the final round, and both have the potential to remain competitive through the weekend at Valhalla. The golfers tied for third at Augusta. Morikawa’s highest PGA Championship finish was a T8 in 2021, and Homa’s was a T13 in 2022. However, Homa ranks higher in total strokes gained and in Strokes Gained: Putting in the last three months, and the money is better with Homa in this head-to-head.
