What does Gus Johnson think of the Anthony Edwards-Michael Jordan comparisons?

The story of this NBA postseason has been Anthony Edwards, to the point where people have begun making Michael Jordan comparisons, which Edwards himself has said he wants to stop.

Legendary play-by-play man Gus Johnson joined Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. to discuss those comparisons, super teams and more on Wednesday’s edition of GoJo and Golic.

Edwards is one of a new generation of stars we’re seeing emerge during this postseason. LeBron, Steph and KD may have gone fishin’, to take a page from the beloved Inside The NBA, but we’re seeing players like Ant-Man along with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Brunson step up. Gus says that’s great for the NBA, especially with Edwards being such a breath of fresh air. Guys says Ant-Man is “cut out of Mount Olympus in terms of great athletes.” Not to mention what Brunson has done, going from a second-round pick to leaving Dallas for New York and becoming the toast of the town while leading the Knicks at his size. Gus also says he’s excited to see what SGA and OKC does in the second round. Gus believes the future of the NBA is very bright.

Senior wonders if we’re seeing the NBA move away from its “superteam” era kicked off by the Celtics’ championship Big Three back in 2008 and perhaps best epitomized by the LeBron-DWade-Bosh troika that brought championships to Miami. If we have begun to see a change in how teams are being constructed, count Gus among those happy with that change.

Going back to Edwards and the Jordan comparisons, Gus says he loves it because MJ is the GOAT. Gus says we need an African-American star to carry the torch, an AMERICAN star to be in the conversation with all the great international players in the league right now. He loves Edwards’ competitive nature telling his idol KD that this is his game now — similar to how MJ did to Magic Johnson in 1992 — and that Ant-Man will see him at USA Basketball training camp ahead of the Olympics.
