WBC interim welterweight champion Mario Barrios (28-2, 18 KOs) defends his title against Fabian Maidana (18-1, 13 KOs) this Saturday, May 4. These two will face off at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. This bout is the co-main event of Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia, as main card coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET on DAZN and Prime Video PPV.

We’ll have round-by-round coverage of both fights, starting with Barrios-Maidana who have projected ringwalks of 10:30 p.m. ET.

Barrios began his career 25-0, before losing to Gervonta Davis and Keith Thurman in back-to-back bouts. However, the 28-year-old responded with two consecutive wins over Jovanie Santiago and Yordenis Ugas. His win against Ugas last September granted him the WBC interim title at 147 pounds.

Maidana has suddenly ascended from the shadows of his older brother former two-division world champion Marcus Maidana. Fabian has secured wins on big name PPV cards like Mayweather-Maidana II. This will be his first ring appearance since an April 2021 win over Carlos Córdoba.

Barrios comes into the bout as the favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook. He is a -1200 favorite while Maidana is a +700 underdog. The favored method of victory is Barrios by KO (-115).

Round 1: Barrios 10-9

Patient start from both. Right from Barrios to the body. Left hook lands for Barrios. Lead jab from Barrios as Maidana unleashes a nice combination late in the round.

Round 2: Barrios 10-9 (Barrios 20-18)

Nice lead jab again from Barrios. Maidana tries a few lefts to head and body but misses. Over hand right hand from Barrios. Maidana with a combo but Barrios covering up nicely. Maidana again with a late combination but not enough.

Round 3: Barrios 10-8 (Barrios 30-26)

Barrios cutting off the ring and now stalking Maidana. Big time right hand from Barrios and down goes Maidana! Well timed right hook. Maidana beats the count but Barrios on a heater. Another left from the champion and Maidana rushes a few punches he’s a bit flustered.

Round 4: Maidana 10-9 (Barrios 39-36)

Now it’s Maidana stepping forward, nice right hand from the challenger. Barrios shooting back some punches of his own.

Round 5: Barrios 10-9 (Barrios 49-45)

Maidana shaking off the third round knockdown. He’s inching forward, perhaps throwing a few more wild punches. Barrios snaps a nice left hook and he’s back in business.

Round 6: Barrios 10-9 (Barrios 59-54)

The champion steps forward and Maidana eats a few punches. Left short uppercut for Barrios. Round goes to the more aggressor Barrios.

Round 7: Barrios 10-9 (Barrios 69-63)

Maidana lets his hands go, but not much landing. Big left jab from Barrios and Maidana demonstrating a chin of steel. Double jab from the champion.

Round 8: Barrios 10-9 (Barrios 79-72)

Maidana launches a nice left hand and noticeable swelling on the right eye of Barrios. Body shot from Barrios and Maidana. Now the two exchange right hooks, sweat flies off of the head of Maidana.

Round 9: Barrios 10-9 (Barrios 89-81)

Left to the body, and upper right hand for Barrios. Although he has a bruised eye, he’s been the more aggressor and pressing Maidana. Late combination from Maidana misses.

Round 10: Barrios 10-9 (Barrios 99-90)

Slower pace for sure in these championship rounds. Although Barrios has a swollen eye, Maidana kind of timid to through. Nice overhand from the champion and he seals the round.

Round 11: Barrios 10-9 (Barrios 109-99)

Barrios doing a good job of dishing and taking punches. Maidana’s accuracy keeping up but his conditioning not so much. Barrios firing off and getting some timely punches.

Round 12: Barrios 10-9 (Barrios 119-108)

Barrios fighting the safe route, and he lands a nice left to start the round. His defense has been underrated and Maidana struggling to find any offense. Another left hand from the champion and he’s cruised to a win here late!
