The Run for the Roses for the roses is almost upon us, as the world prepares for the 150th Kentucky Derby on Saturday from Churchill Downs.

NBC Sports’ Eddie Olczyk joined Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. on Thursday to talk about the first leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown.

Eddie is going into his 10th year as part of NBC’s Kentucky Derby coverage, which he says is a lot of fun. Senior wants to know what people should be looking for in Saturday’s race. Eddie says the Run for the Roses is looking like it’s going to be chalky, as it looks like it’s going to lean toward the favorites. He says there’s a lot of pace and speed in the race, so he thinks there could be some horses who try to go out and put on a clinic on getting the lead early and going wire to wire. He notes that this race is a mile and a quarter in front of 175-180K people, something which will never happen again for the majority of these horses.
The favorite is Fierceness, trained by Todd Pletcher, and he looks like the real deal. Eddie says Fierceness is going to be a horse that gets out there quickly, but Eddie thinks there are going to be some other horses who are out there running with him. Eddie says you not only have to worry about these horses but also about playing meteorologist as well. He notes that there could be some rain in the forecast for Friday, which could maybe have an effect on how the track is playing, along with a 40 percent chance of rain on Saturday.
Eddie says that when you have a race with a lot of speed in it he’s not much of a favorite player, although you have to take what the track gives you. He says the majority of his wagers will be around the No. 4 horse, Catching Freedom. Eddie says this horse is probably going to be sitting in the 10-12 numbers around the first turn and could be a horse that makes one of those big runs like Rich Strike did.
