Live results: Kambosos wins via majority decision (114-114, 117-111, 115-113) over Hughes. Questionable to say the least, but Kambosos gets the job done!

Former unified lightweight champion of the world, George Kambosos Jr. (20-2, 10 KOs) returns to the ring this Saturday, July 22 to fight Maxi Hughes (26-5-2, 5 KOs) live from the Firelake Arena in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The main card is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET with main event ring-walks projected for 11 p.m. Kambosos Jr. vs. Hughes will be streamed on ESPN+.

Kambosos Jr. enters this bout following back-to-back losses to current undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney in 2022. The 30-year-old from Australia defeated Lee Selby in 2020, making him mandatory challenger for the IBF lightweight title. His signature win came in 2021 as he upset Teofimo Lopez by way of split decision to earn the unified lightweight crown. On a championship high, he then faced off with Haney twice, losing both bouts in his hometown.

Hughes is taking a big step up in competition, but he has won six straight fights, including a 2021 victory over Jovanni Straffon. In that win he secured the IBF lightweight title and since then has successfully defended the championship twice. Hughes has a big opportunity ahead and will try to extend his winning streak to 7 against Kambosos Jr.

Kambosos Jr. is a -340 favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook while Hughes is the underdog at +260.

Round 1: Hughes 10-9

Slow pace to start out, but Hughes looking composed early on. Left hand from Hughes lands up-top. Kambosos tries to land but not connecting as clean. More punches being thrown and now Kambosos finally with a strong left hand. Hughes with a nice counter to end the round.

Round 2: Kambosos 10-9 (19-19)

More aggressive Kambosos, tries a nice double jab but misses. Hughes with another nice counter. Kambosos more efficient connecting better with punches and rhythm. Precise right hand for Kambosos, as the champion gets back into form this round.

Round 3: Hughes 10-9 (Hughes 29-28)

Kambosos on the attack, this time with a right hand early. Kambosos tries it again, but Hughes avoids it and responds with a nice counter followed by an uppercut. Good work to the body for the challenger to end the round.

Round 4: Kambosos 10-9 (38-38)

Left hand lands upstairs for Hughes. Kambosos comes back with a left to the body. Kambosos fires off a double right but misses the mark. Left hook from Kambosos lands on Hughes. Another right hand lands for Kambosos.

Round 5: Hughes 10-9 (Hughes 48-47)

Left hand attempt from Hughes, but Kambosos blocks it away. Pace slowing down a bit, as both fighters get into a tie up. Counter punch scores for Hughes, then another powerful left hand to the face of Kambosos, and now the momentum has swung over to the challenger.

Round 6: Hughes 10-9 (Hughes 58-56)

Hughes comes out wit the same aggression, connects on two left hands. Kambosos aims back but a little short on some of his punches. After a tie-up, a sudden clash of head occurs. Referee lets them fight on. Kambosos connects with a left hook, Hughes responds with a left himself. The two trade exchanges to end the round.

Round 7: Kambosos 10-9 (Hughes 67-66)

After an action packed round 6, both come out inaccurate missing on punches to start this round. Kambosos throws a jab and misses the target. Back to the jab for Kambosos and this time around it lands. Right hand from Kambosos lands up-top again. Now Kambosos hitting a stride, connects on a counter. Kambosos brings a hook to score as Hughes gets near a corner.

Round 8: Hughes 10-9 (Hughes 77-75)

Both fighters giving their all as Hughes continues his success with work to the body. Kambosos aims for the double right but doesn’t connect. Hughes hanging tough, but just absorbed a left hook and right from Kambosos. Hughes responds and back on the hunt, nice left hand uptop to finish the round.

Round 9: Hughes 10-9 (Hughes 87-84)

Kambosos trying to land the haymaker, but Hughes doing just enough to make things tough for him. Kambosos sneaks a right hand in between the guard. Hughes fighting back and attacking the body of Kambosos with a right hand. Hughes controlling the tempo of the fight and ahead on cards it seems.

Round 10: Kambosos 10-9 (Hughes 96-94)

After early action, pace slowing down as the “championship rounds” emerge. Kambosos lands a nice right, one of his best punches of the night. He seems to have flipped the switch here as he connects again, this time a right and left combination to the face of Hughes.

Round 11: Hughes 10-9 (Hughes 106-103)

Hughes lands nicely to the body to begin. This one is getting closer and closer, as Kambosos once again comes with a strong right hand. Both fighters limited on energy as the round comes to an end. Hughes slightly makes contact with an uppercut. Not much landing to end the round as each corner urges their fighter on. Hughes by a thin margin.

Round 12: Hughes 10-9 (Hughes 116-112)

As the final round gets underway, Kambosos will need to score a knockdown and be aggressive here. He tries a right, but is swiftly countered by a nice Hughes left hand. Kambosos going for the haymaker but not really connecting. Hughes relaxing as he should since he’s ahead on the cards. More inefficiency to finish the round, Hughes in the driver’s seat.
