USA vs. Canada, 2022 Olympic hockey: Live updates, scores for women’s gold medal game

1:23 a.m. FINAL: Canada 3, USA 2.

Canada wins the 2022 women’s hockey gold medal. It’s the fifth gold for the country in the seven Olympiads for the sport. The USA falls to 2-4 in gold medal games in the Olympics.

The American outshot Canada 40-21, but there’s no doubt about who deserved to win the match. Canada put away their chances, and the Americans simply couldn’t convert their opportunities in both group play and the gold medal match.

1:21 a.m. GOAL USA: After enough rebounds to satisfy Dennis Rodman, Amanda Kessel puts it in the onion bag with only 12.5 seconds remaining.

3-2 Canada

1:18 a.m. Poulin to the box for tripping with 85 seconds remaining, but the Americans still need two. It’s a 6 on 4 situation forthcoming.

1:14 a.m. After killing the penalty, Canada has been consistently in control. Besides Megan Keller going off Desbiens’s shoulder, the Americans pull their goalie needing two.

1:05 a.m. Jocelyne Larocque is back in the box for holding with just under 10 minutes to play in the game. The US leads 31-20 on shots, but the only power play they’ve scored on is the one when they were down a player.

12:55 a.m. Another post for the Americans four minutes in, and it’s Alex Carpenter off the far one from close in.

12:52 a.m. The puck is dropped, and Canada is 20 minutes from gold.

12:33 a.m. After two periods: Canada 3, USA 1.

The goal breathes a little life into the USA, but they need to find some serious adjustments if they want to keep the pressure coming. The shorty for sure got them buzzing, but can it carry over to the third period?

12:28 a.m. GOAL USA SHORTHANDED: The USA’s Megan Keller to the box for holding, but an aggressive Canada gets caught out, and Hilary Knight takes it in, and puts away her own rebound with Brandt next to her.

Can that get the States back in the game with 3:21 to play in the second?

3-1 Canada

12:22 a.m. A power play without structure or purpose is easily killed by Canada. If you don’t believe shots on goal is a stat that lies, the USA actually leads 21-16 in the category. But anyone with two eyes that’s seen a snowflake before knows who the better team is tonight.

12:18 a.m. Canada finally does something wrong, and Jocelyne Larocque goes to the box for holding. This isn’t a must score for the United States power play, it’s a “why are we playing the third period, let’s just beat the traffic” if they don’t.

12:14 a.m. GOAL CANADA. It’s Poulin again off a rebound generated by a neutral zone turnover. The USA defense looks lost, and while there have been some soft goals from Cavallini so far, this was off a rebound that would be truly difficult for anyone to control.

Unless something drastic changes in the last 30 minutes, Canada will win their fifth gold medal in seven Olympics.

12:08 a.m. The thing Canada did so efficiently in the Group A game was kill the third period off with a lead. They committed to defense with great efficiency, and really gave the USA only weak opportunities for the last 20 minutes of the match.

They seem to be doing the same thing here, allowing the USA to possess but not really find a path towards the net, or the ability to get traffic in front.

12:01 a.m. We are back and the puck is dropped to start the second period.

11:45 p.m. After one period: Canada 2, USA 0.

The shots were 11 for each team, but the quality difference in them is high. If there was xG for the Olympics we could see, the scoreline is probably pretty fair. The whiff by Brandt early truly looms large for the States.

11:41 p.m. USA kills off the man advantage, but still looking all out of sorts here. They need a tip or a break or something to go right on the offensive end.

11:38 p.m. Kendall Coyne to the bench for delay of game, and Canada is on the power play looking for a third.

11:37 p.m. GOAL CANADA: A terrible giveaway from the USA’s in their own end, and Poulin buries it top shelf stick side.

11:35 p.m. America’s Hat is topping off this game with more skill and speed than the States so far. Canada leads on shots 7-5 with eight minutes left in the period, but it’s also the quality of them. Besides the post from Brandt, we haven’t seen Canada’s goalie Ann-Renee Desbiens tested much.

11:25 GOAL CANADA: After a won offensive draw from Marie Phillip-Poulin, Claire Thompson whips it in from the left point, and Sarah Nurse tips it by Alex Cavallini from the slot. No doubter here, and again the Americans can’t capitalize while Canada is more efficient with opportunities.

11:22 p.m. NO GOAL. After a challenge the USA, the Canadians were clearly offsides before the tally. We’re back at even strength, but the Americans dodge a bullet there.

11:20 p.m: GOAL CANADA. Just like the matchup in Group A a week ago, the Americans start hot and are controlling play. But Natalie Spooner bangs in a rebound from Melodie Daoust.

11:14 p.m. The USA’s Hannah Brandt hits the post with about half the net yawning at her following a face off in Canada’s zone just over two minutes into the game. That always stings, but in a game with this much pressure it’s brutal.

11:10 p.m. The puck is dropped and we’re underway!

11:05 p.m. We are about to drop the puck on the biggest game in the sport of women’s hockey for the sixth time. Canada has won three of the matches, with the USA taking the first and last in 1998 and 2018.

America’s biggest team event of the Winter Olympics is upon us. The US women’s hockey team faces Canada on Wednesday night in the gold medal game of the Beijing Olympics. The puck drops at 11:10 p.m. ET and the game will air on NBC. Four years ago, the gold medal game was on NBC Sports Network, so this opens it up to a broader audience.

These two teams have one of the most notable rivalries in international competition, and really sports in general. In the previous six Olympiads since women’s ice hockey was introduced, these squads have faced off in five of the gold medal games. The US won the inaugural gold in the 1998 Nagano Games and again four years ago in Pyeongchang. In between, Canada won the other three matchups and beat Sweden in 2006 for the gold.

Canada beat the US 4-2 in group play last week, so it is not surprising they’re fairly sizable favorites. These are the two best teams in the world when it comes to women’s hockey, but Canada is a -210 favorite to win at DraftKings Sportsbook.
