Tracking Chet Holmgren’s stats during NBA Summer League

We’re recapping Holmgren’s performance through two Summer League games.

Update — Holmgren has been performing well in the Vegas Summer League for the Thunder. He’s coming off 8 points, 5 steals and 5 rebounds in a win over the Kings on Wednesday. Prior to that, Holmgren posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards against the Magic on Monday in a victory. In a battle of top picks last weekend, the Thunder lost to the Rockets on Saturday. Holmgren had 12 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks in the loss.

Update — Holmgren is sitting out of Thursday night’s Vegas SL game against the Philadelphia 76ers after playing back-to-back contests in Salt Lake City the past few nights.

Holmgren posts double-double in second game

The Thunder moved to 2-0 in the SLC Summer League and Holmgren had another strong performance with 11 points, 12 boards, 3 assists and 2 blocks in around 26 minutes. While Holmgren had an off night shooting the ball (3-for-11, 1-of-6 from 3), he finished +14 and OKC got another victory. This was just a tune up for the Thunder and Holmgren before the big stage, which is the Vegas Summer League, starting on Thursday.

Update — Holmgren has his first unofficial career double-double in the NBA with 11 points and 11 boards against the Grizz as we near the end of the third quarter. OKC has taken a big lead thanks to Giddey and Williams. Holmgren has dominated the boards in the second half so far. That’s just another way he can make an impact on the game without scoring. Holmgren has also recovered a bit on defense with this block:

Update — The Thunder are only up 48-43 on the Grizz at halftime and Holmgren has 11 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists in just over 13 minutes. Josh Giddey and Jalen Williams are also in double figure scoring early on. Holmgren is getting a bit exposed on the defensive end trying to deal with the bigger Kenny Lofton Jr. Despite the defensive struggles, Holmgren is doing fine again.

Update — Holmgren and the Thunder are back in action on Wednesday night in the SLC Summer League against the Memphis Grizzlies. So naturally we’re back for another night filled with overreactions to his performance in Game 2. Holmgren has 7 points through the first quarter, so a bit slower than last night. He’s also got 3 boards and a few assists, so on pace for another decent stat line for those playing at home.

Chet Holmgren Summer League debut recap

It looks like Holmgren’s final stat line will fall as:

23 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 6 blocks, 1 steal on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Not too shabby. Most of the “overreacting” is all in good fun tonight. Holmgren going off against SL competition isn’t all that surprising. It is still encouraging. Holmgren could have come out and looked awful, which would spark a similar response from the other side. But he didn’t.

Williams ended up with 17 points and Giddey closed at 14 points and 11 assists. These three could be the future in OKC along with SGA. The Thunder picked up the win over the Jazz with ease.

Update — Holmgren is up to 21 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 blocks. This is going to be quite the stat line. Giddey has a double-double with 10 points and 11 dimes. Williams has 12 points and the Thunder are up by 20+ with the third quarter almost done.

Update — It’s shocking but Holmgren has slowed down as the game is into the third quarter. The Thunder are blowing out Utah’s SL squad. Holmgren has plateaued a bit at 18 points. He is up to five rebounds SIX blocks and four assists, with the super outside shot at the elusive Summer League quadruple-double. Holmgren will have an outside shot at a triple-double but chances are he takes it easy given the score.

Update — Ummmmm, who knew all you had to do was score 18 before halftime in a Summer League game to have your Rookie of the Year odds go from +500 to +400? Not us. That’s exactly what Holmgren has done tonight and he isn’t even done. He hasn’t even begun to peak. Holmgren also has three blocks and is shooting 6-of-7 from the floor.

Don’t look now but Williams is also up to 10 points. The Thunder rookies came to play. Add Williams to that list below that included most of what will be the future in OKC.

Don’t look now but the Oklahoma City Thunder may be in business. Are we overreacting to NBA Summer League? Of course we are. Chet Holmgren is playing in his first bit of NBA action in the Summer League on Tuesday night vs. the Utah Jazz. Holmgren has wasted no time establishing himself in this League. He’s got 13 points in the first quarter and is +20 with three treys.

Holmgren isn’t the only one looking solid. Second-year guard Josh Giddey has five assists and five points early on. Jalen Williams is up to six points off the bench. The Thunder may be a team who could surprise people in the 2022-23 season if everything comes together. Holmgren, Giddey, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort and Darius Bazley isn’t a bad core. If nothing else the Thunder aren’t too far off from getting back into the playoff picture and getting over the loss of all their superstars.
