Louis Varland is on his way to Toronto along with veteran infielder Ty France. Varland was once a prized starting pitcher in the Minnesota system, yet he moved to the bullpen in a full-time capacity this season and the results have been amazing. Over 51 appearances and 49.0 innings, Varland has managed a 2.02 ERA and a 2.89 FIP. Varland also possesses 95th percentile average fastball velocity (97.9) and a 94th percentile ground ball rate (55.6%). As for France, he’s the far less important element of this deal, though the Jays were in search of a right-handed bench bat.
Toronto is listed as a -170 favorite on the DraftKings Sportsbook to hold on to their AL East lead. There’s not really any value in backing the Jays at the moment — especially with the Yankees loading up like they did today.
