Fantasy Basketball Value Picks: Top DraftKings NBA DFS Bargain Plays for January 12

Garion Thorne breaks down his top DraftKings value plays for Friday’s NBA slate.

I like to think I’m in at least the 95th percentile of knowledgeable NBA fans, but if I’m being completely honest, I has zero clue there was a game being played in Paris yesterday. Came as a total shock to me. Also, why are we always exporting the Nets? We don’t have a better team to send the good people of France?

Anyways, all games on tonight’s eight-game featured slate are taking place in the States. I triple-checked, guys. You’re welcome.

SF Cam Whitmore, Houston Rockets at Detroit Pistons, $4,300

Feels like the Cam Whitmore thing is starting to happen in Houston. Allow me to do a quick refresher on Whitmore’s story. The rookie appeared to be a consensus lottery pick heading into this year’s draft — a high lottery pick — yet he fell all the way to the Rockets at pick 20. Whitmore then started this season in the G League, where he quickly showed he was too talented for that level of competition. In fact, in 13 games, Whitmore averaged 26.2 points and 6.8 rebounds. Now, since basically late December, Whitmore’s finally snuck into Houston’s rotation, taking advantage of injuries to Dillon Brooks (oblique) and Tari Eason (leg). This all culminated in the Villanova product registering 32.6 minutes and a career-best 16 points in Wednesday’s loss to the Bulls. Whitmore is good. Detroit is not. I’d expect the forward to have another big showing on Friday.

SG Luke Kennard, Memphis Grizzlies vs. Los Angeles Clippers, $4,800

The logic here is pretty easy to follow. The Grizzlies are simply running out of guards. In the last two weeks, the team has lost Ja Morant (shoulder), Marcus Smart (finger) and Derrick Rose (thigh) to long-term injuries. Truly, there are no point guards left on this roster — though Desmond Bane ($9,100) can do a pretty passible impression. The trickle-down effect of all these absences is big minutes and big opportunity for both Vince Williams Jr. ($5,300) and Kennard, who recently joined the team’s starting five. In 23.0 minutes on Wednesday, Kennard racked up 14 points, five rebounds and even four assists as a secondary creator. That translated out to 28.75 DKFP, which sort of feels like the veteran’s floor if he’s given anywhere around 25 minutes of action going forward.

PF/C Nikola Jovic, Miami Heat vs. Orlando Magic, $4,800

Jovic has now started four straight games for the Heat and the results have mostly been spectacular. To wit, the former first-round pick has exceeded 30.0 DKFP in three of the four contests, including 32.25 DKFP in Wednesday’s loss to Oklahoma City. That was a game where Jovic not only matched a season-high with 15 points, but set a new career-high with 32.5 minutes played. Now, Caleb Martin ($5,900; ankle) has been upgraded to questionable for Friday’s tilt with Orlando, and his return from an eight-game absence could cut into Jovic’s role. However, Tyler Herro ($8,000; shoulder) has now been added to Miami’s injury report, while both Jimmy Butler ($7,700; toe) and Kyle Lowry ($4,600; hand) remain doubtful to suit up. Someone needs to step-up for the Heat and there’s no reason it won’t continue to be Jovic.
