The PGA TOUR heads to Michigan this week for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Detroit Golf Club will be the host, and measures as a 7,330-yard par 72 with Bentgrass greens. We are back to a full 156-man field with a 36-hole cut this week after last week’s Signature Event.
Below I have outlined my two favorite bets for the week.
Cameron Young to win (+1600)
Young is set up perfectly this week for Detroit Golf Club. He will be able to use his driver — which is his biggest weapon — and have short wedges in to almost every hole. His distance off the tee will also help navigate the four par 5s on the course this week.
Young is coming off a historic weekend at the Travelers Championship, where he became just the 13th player in PGA TOUR history to shoot a 59. He followed up his career-day by making birdie on his first four holes in the final round, before ultimately settling for a T9 finish. It marked his fifth top-10 of the season in 15 starts for Young, who also finished runner-up at the Valspar and ninth at the Masters.
In his lone start at the Rocket Mortgage back in 2022, Young finished T2 behind Tony Finau. He gained 10.2 strokes from tee-to-green that week, including 5.27 off the tee. His game was tailor made for this tournament, and it feels like the best possible spot for him to get his first career PGA TOUR victory.
Nicolai Hojgaard to win (+6000)
Hojgaard is not having a particularly good season, but Detroit Golf Club should be an optimal course fit for the 23-year old. As mentioned above, DGC is a track that rewards both driving distance and putting, two traits which Hojgaard possesses in spades.
Just take a look at previous winners of this event — Bryson DeChambeau, Tony Finau, Cam Davis, what do all of them have in common? Oh yea, they’re all incredibly long off the tee. Even guys like Matthew Wolff and Joaquin Niemann — who have finished runner-up in the Motor City — both possess length off the tee.
This will be Hojgaard’s second time playing the Rocket Mortgage, after finishing T24 in his debut last year. The Dane has already shown upside at other long courses this season, finishing solo-second at Torrey Pines back in January, before impressively posting a T16 at Augusta. Despite not yet winning on the PGA TOUR, Hojgaard has already posted three DP World Tour victories — including the 2023 DP World Tour Championship, where he outlasted the likes of Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrrell Hatton to take home the title.
Hojgaard is simply too talented to be sitting at 60/1 in this field, and he boasts the exact profile we are looking for this week.
