Marshall (6-6, 3-5 SBC) finished their season with a 35-21 win over Arkansas State to become bowl eligible. The Thundering Herd started their season 4-0 with wins over Virginia Tech and Old Dominion, but went on a five-game losing streak after that. Marshall quarterback Cam Fancher and wide receiver Caleb Coombes both entered the transfer portal and will not participate in the bowl game.
UTSA (8-4, 7-1 AAC) fell to Tulane, 29-16, in the final game of their season, just missing out on the chance to reach their conference championship game. The Roadrunners had wins over North Texas, South Florida, and Rice in conference play.
