Happy New Year everyone! As we flip the calendar to 2024, we enter the final week the NFL regular season and by the end of this weekend, the full playoff field will be set. Some Super Bowl 58 contenders are firing on all cylinders at the end of the year, while others will be limping into the postseason. Below, we’ll take a look at who’s rising and who’s falling coming out of Week 17.
Who had the best Week 17 performance?
The Baltimore Ravens are looking the part of a top Super Bowl contender and they demolished the Miami Dolphins in a 56-19 rout on Sunday, officially clinching the No. 1 seed in the AFC. The MVP debate is over as Lamar Jackson went a smooth 18-21 for 321 yards and five touchdowns in the blowout. He was helped by a defense that forced three turnovers and held the Tua Tagovailoa/Tyreek Hill connection in check.
The AFC will run through Baltimore and assuming John Harbaugh plays his backups in this Sunday’s season finale, this group will be rested up following their first-round bye. Good luck to everyone else.
Which favorites have work to do?
Something is up with the Philadelphia Eagles as they were clipped in a 35-31 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. After cruising to a 10-1 start, the Eagles have suddenly lost four of their last five and allowed the Cardinals to zoom down the field for the go-ahead score in the final minutes of action. And if that wasn’t bad enough, DeVonta Smith suffered a leg injury and left the stadium on crutches while wearing a walking boot. The No. 1 seed in the NFC is off the table for Philly, but it can still win the NFC East when facing the Giants this Sunday. They have to figure things out quickly, or an early playoff exit will be on the horizon soon.
The Kansas City Chiefs also haven’t looked so hot as of late, but they took down the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday to clinch the AFC West title for an eighth straight season. The march through the postseason will be more difficult than in year’s past and believe it or not, Patrick Mahomes will most likely be playing his very first road playoff game if they advance in the playoffs. KC will need to get some things figured out with Wild Card weekend approaching.
Will either No. 1 seed get upset before the Super Bowl?
San Francisco is the No. 1 seed in the NFC and current favorite to win Super Bowl 58. While the 49ers should be comfortable with home-field advantage in the postseason, there are some things that should raise some concerns.
They had a stinker against the Ravens on Christmas and their defense made Brock Purdy look like Mr. Irrelevant by picking him off four times in the contest. And while they did bounce back with a 27-10 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday, star running back Christian McCaffrey tweaked his calf. The Niners need to be on alert or a team like the Detroit Lions or the aforementioned Eagles could come into Levi Stadium and ruin their hopes and dreams.
