BYU Cougars vs. TCU Horned Frogs pick, prediction for College Football Week 5 on Saturday 10/3/26

A pivotal Big 12 showdown is on tap tonight in Fort Worth. #10 BYU (3-0) has been a buzzsaw so far, looking capable of winning a conference title. It’s been a bit more challenging for TCU (2-2), losers in both of their Power 4 games this season. Based off of their collective talent, the Horned Frogs are capable of more. On paper, this has all the makings of a trap for the Cougars; can they remain undefeated this evening in Texas?

The Cougars are listed as 6.5-point favorites over the Horned Frogs, with the total set at O/U 47.5 points. Below is my full preview, prediction and best bet for Saturday’s BYU vs. TCU Week 5 matchup.

BYU vs. TCU prediction, preview

This will be a battle between an unstoppable force, BYU’s running game, and an immovable object, TCU’s run defense. The latter has been a well-oiled machine, starting in the backfield with LJ Martin. The reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year hasn’t skipped a beat, churning out 309 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Last time out against Colorado State, the senior recorded 176 rushing yards and three scores on just 15 carries. As if that wasn’t enough, Bear Bachmeier is one of the nation’s better dual-threat quarterbacks. He’s thrown for 642 yards, ran for 64 more, and racked up eight total touchdowns. Those two alone are enough to cause headaches for opposing defensive coordinators.

Still, these Horned Frogs won’t be intimidated by the moment. This group excels up front, holding opponents to just 2.87 yards per rush attempt. That’s good enough for fourth-best in the Big 12. Keep in mind, this defense allowed just 36 points combined in losses to North Carolina and UCF. In other words, they haven’t been the problem. Granted, TCU has been a bit more vulnerable in its secondary. These defensive backs are allowing 7.4 yards per pass attempt, third-worst in the conference. However, Bachmeier and company aren’t the most formidable group through the air.

Preventing points is nice. Scoring them is a different story for TCU. This offense has been stuck in neutral for most of the season, doomed in part by mental mistakes. Head coach Sonny Dykes’ club has turned the ball over seven times over four games. That includes three interceptions from quarterback Jaden Craig. The senior has been solid otherwise, racking up 1,213 passing yards and seven touchdowns. On the ground, running back Jeremy Payne has gained 355 rushing yards. As a unit, the Horned Frogs are averaging a respectable 442.0 yards per game. That’s eighth-best in the 16-team Big 12 conference.

After a terrific 2025 campaign, this BYU defense has been even better this season. The team is allowing 271.0 yards per game to opponents, fourth-best in the Big 12. On the ground, opponents are gaining a meager 2.85 yards per carry. With that being said, there is one glaring weakness for this group: pressure. The Cougars are last in the conference with just 4.0 sacks over their first three games. To make matters worse, they’re only 15th with 17.0 tackles for loss. An inability to frustrate opposing passers hasn’t hurt Kalani Sitake’s team so far. Still, a home game vs. Arizona in Week 2 is their only matchup this season against a Power 4 opponent. BYU should prioritize getting Craig out of the pocket tonight.

Best Bet: TCU +6.5 (-112)

With over 90% of all bets backing the Cougars, there’s clear value on the board with their opponents tonight. TCU has been its own worst enemy, literally handing away wins with a knack for turning the ball over. At home, in primetime, you’d think this group could finally avoid making those crucial mistakes. While BYU likely ekes out a win, expect the Horned Frogs to keep things close tonight in Fort Worth.
