The first season successfully paired Sacred Heart’s familiar faces with a new class of doctors while letting its original trio reckon with the changes that come with age, responsibility and life outside the hospital. Now, with Dr. Cox’s health still a concern and several relationships in flux, the revival returns with a two-episode premiere.

Scrubs is back for another season with old friends — Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley), Carla (Judy Reyes), the Janitor (Neil Flynn), Jordan (Christa Miller) and Elliot’s ex, Sean (Scott Foley) – returning and new friends still getting their bearings at Sacred Heart.

My First Time in a While
J.D. enlists Turk and Elliot to help with Dr. Cox’s care. Meanwhile, Elliot finds an unexpected burst of confidence years in the making.
My Mentee
J.D. attempts an insurance workaround, creating tension with his new mentee. Meanwhile, Elliot tries to guide Tosh’s specialty choices, and Turk flexes his own skills as a mentor.

- The revival saw J.D. return to Sacred Heart as the new Chief of Medicine, taking over for Dr. Cox with the instruction to do for the new “newbies” what Cox once did for J.D. Little did J.D. know that his mentor was ill with Microscopic polyangiitis and he would have to step in and take care of Perry — even if he had to make treatment decisions Cox didn’t like. The finale revealed that J.D.’s treatment plan isn’t working the way he hoped for Cox, so it seems like we’ll continue to see Cox as a patient for a bit this season. It was nice to see that Cox, despite whatever he may say or do, cares for J.D. and does respect him enough to allow him to take care of him. Something tells me he still has lessons to bestow on his protégé.
- J.D. is back at Sacred Heart, but he’s not back with Elliot. Throughout the season we see them traverse the difficult interpersonal dynamic of their divorce at the same time as co-parenting and working together (with the added wrinkle of J.D. technically being her boss). Both try their hand at post-divorce dating with Elliot giving it a try with pilot Wes and J.D. having a meet-cute with Rachel Bilson’s Charlie in the season finale. Things look like they didn’t take flight between Elliot and Wes, so the second season of the Scrubs revival is bringing back Elliot’s former flame Sean, who has a notoriously difficult history with J.D. Things are about to get interesting.
- In other matters of the heart, after a season of getting close to Amara (Layla Mohammadi) before being friend zoned, Asher (Jacob Dudman) gets an unexpected kiss from Tosh (Ava Bunn) in the finale. Meanwhile, sparks may be flying between Amara and Blake (David Gridley). The original series was full of romance in the workplace, so that the revival has several potential couples coming together in the hospital is no surprise.
- Also no surprise is that the two central relationships in Turk’s life — with J.D. and Carla — are still going strong. We did get to see Turk be a bit vulnerable with the toll being chief of surgery has taken on him over the years, but that doesn’t mean he won’t do his best to wingman for J.D. or be a willing accomplice for his usual nonsense.
- The aforementioned Tosh has been bumped up to a series regular. A nice wrinkle to last season was seeing Elliot take Tosh under her wing. Elliot was able to call upon the lessons Cox taught her in the original series and apply them to her own mentorship of Tosh, who needed Elliot’s guidance but also through her embrace of social media helped Elliot accept new ideas. The other interns are still recurring players, but they all got their moments to shine — from Turk seeing something of himself in Dashana and working with her to open up emotionally to Blake becoming more vulnerable with patients and his colleagues. Meanwhile, Amara becomes less sheltered thanks in part to moving out of her parents’ place and in with Dashana, while Asher works to overcome his anxiety and self-doubt.
- That isn’t the only bit of casting news, as Joel Kim Booster’s Dr. Kevin Park — J.D.’s hospital frenemy who was passed over by Cox for chief of medicine — will not be back for the revival’s second season. Taking his place will be John Higgins’ Dr. Grant Summers, who J.D. wants to be his mentee but may have other ideas.
