A 13-game MLB slate is on tap for Saturday. For those looking to cash in quickly on a bet, nothing makes more sense than an NRFI. With that being said, there’s more to this one than meets the eye. Some pitchers thrive early, while others take more time to get settled in than others. Which NRFI picks are worth a closer look on Saturday?

Rangers vs. Twins NRFI (-115)
Texas is one of the few clubs with something to play for this weekend, hoping to eke out an AL West title. This afternoon, it’ll be Nathan Eovaldi toeing the slab for the Rangers. It hasn’t been a career year for the righty, but he remains an above-average arm. Over 141.1 innings pitched (22 starts), he’s notched a 4.27 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 141 strikeouts (9.0 K/9). Even more important, Eovaldi has allowed a first inning run just once over his previous ten starts. In comparison, the Twins are running out the clock on a miserable second half. Since August 1st, Minnesota has scored the league’s eighth-fewest runs (208).
As for the home team, Bailey Ober gets the nod on Saturday. Much like Eovaldi, the big righty has been decent albeit unspectacular. Through 126.0 innings of work (23 starts), he’s put up a 4.21 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 91 strikeouts (6.5 K/9). However, he’s been much better at home (3.30 ERA) than on the road (5.50 ERA). Today’s opponents, the Rangers, own the league’s third-worst OPS against right-handed pitching (.690). Left-handed batters have a mediocre .293 on-base percentage against Ober this season. A southpaw-laden Rangers lineup could have some trouble in this one.
Angels vs. Mariners NRFI (-145)
Looking for any silver lining in Los Angeles? Ryan Johnson is your man. The newest member of this Angels rotation has gained momentum during the second half. During his previous nine outings, all starts, the right-hander has recorded a 2.39 ERA. To boot, Johnson comes into Saturday’s matchup riding a seven-game NRFI streak. In comparison, the Mariners don’t inspire much confidence at the plate. Seattle is averaging 3.81 runs per game at home, second-fewest in the majors. When Johnson last faced the M’s on September 15th, he allowed one earned run over six innings.
On the other side, Kade Anderson will toe the slab for Seattle. The highly touted prospect hasn’t been dominant to start his MLB tenure, but he’s certainly shown flashes of greatness. That includes last week’s seven-inning, scoreless masterpiece vs. Colorado. Anderson has allowed a first inning run only twice over six starts this season. As for the Angels, they’re averaging the league’s second-fewest runs per game (4.05). Since the start of August, Los Angeles has scored an MLB-worst 182 total runs. A talented arm such as Anderson should escape the first inning unscathed tonight.
