Florida begins a glorious new era Saturday night when Florida Atlantic visits The Swamp. Jon “The Juice” Sumrall, last year’s Tulane hero, takes over the Gators after their 4-8 season under now-JMU HC Billy Napier. Vibes are high, and not just on the home sideline. For the Owls, Zach Kittley starts his second year as head coach, and has big aspirations for 2026. The markets are expecting a shootout for this one, but I think that total overstates how quickly Florida’s rebuilt offense should click on all cylinders. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s college football game between the Florida Gators and the Florida Atlantic Owls.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Florida vs. FAU prediction, preview
Florida Atlantic’s is not a passing game with which to be trifled. Quarterback Caden Veltkamp threw for 3,641 yards and 24 touchdowns last year. The Owls finished, staggeringly, with the nation’s top passing offense. They averaged 340.2y/g through the air and 434.7y/g overall. Their running game ranked 124th, however, leaving the offense unusually dependent upon repeated dropbacks. That favors vicious front sevens and ball-hawking secondaries.
Alternatively: it favors the home team inside an anxious, loud, and demanding SEC pantheon. Florida Atlantic’s passing offense didn’t come without the sort of mistakes you expect from such volume. They threw 20 interceptions last season, and opponents repeatedly forced Veltkamp to spin miracles under pressure. Last year’s Gators’ defense allowed just 24.0p/g, despite facing one of the most rugged SEC schedules. Returning LBs Myles Graham and Aaron Chiles bring enough speed and veteran savvy to disguise pressure, fool Veltkamp, and close on underneath windows. I could see some turnovers going the Gators’ way.
We’re all waiting to see what juice Sumrall’s got for this offense after an inconsistent 2025 under Napier. Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo won the QB job after completing 57.8% of his limited college throws. He’s got a production profile of 938 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions across two seasons. He’s raw. Offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner coached him at Georgia Tech, which should help Philo settle into an offense into which he’s already had experience settling.
FAU vs. Florida pick, best bet
The Gators should, then, run the Baugh. Jadan Baugh is going to be a name we talk about come NFL Draft ’27 time. Expect the Gators to lean on their prized returning feature back against a defense that conceded 203.1 rushing y/g. The Owls also allowed 36.3p/g total last year. Florida should be able to protect Philo and keep him focused on a narrow game plan. The defensive veterans will wear down a weak front and keep Veltkamp watching while extended drives drain the clock.
Florida Atlantic’s pace and passing production make garbage time bombs the thing I’m most scared of when considering the under. I’d still need the Owls to reach roughly 20 before this total becomes uncomfortable, in theory. Florida’s defensive speed and the visitors’ turnover history suggest 20 is a big number. Sumrall can win his debut decisively through field position, defense and, a patient ground game led by one of the nation’s best running backs. It’s the year of Jadan Baugh grinding teams down. And we’ll follow him under here.
Best bet: Under 59.5 (-112)
Projected score: Florida 40, Florida Atlantic 14
Best Bet: Florida vs. FAU u59.5 total points (-110)
