Week 1 of the 2026 college football season is officially off and running. One of eight Friday night matchups brings us to West Lafayette, Indiana for an intrastate buy game with Purdue hosting Indiana State. The schools will clash for the 8th time, with all of the previous seven matchups going in favor of the Boilermakers.
Purdue (-35.5 on the DraftKings Sportsbook) is looking to kick off the ‘26 campaign on a high note following a dismal 2-10 season just ago. Barry Odom enters his second season leading Purdue and returns 7 starters from last year’s squad, including quarterback Ryan Browne Jr. The Sycamores (just 3 wins in 2025) enter Friday’s game having already played a game in Week 0, a 2-point loss hosting Southeast Missouri in a game that was pretty evenly matched (yards gained of 346 to 327). Indiana State has lost its last 5 matchups against the spread versus FBS opponents (Phil Steele).
The forecast for this one looks clean as of Thursday. 90 degrees at kickoff with no rain and minimal wind expected; there could, however, be light showers throughout the second half (MySportsWeather).

When Indiana State has the Ball
John Bear enters his second season as offensive coordinator, the first of which saw the Sycamores finish a paltry 9th in the conference in offensive production. Despite only 21 points scored in Week 0, Bear’s offense demonstrated decent balance (36 dropbacks, 27 rushing attempts) with junior QB Elijah Owens logging a strong performance (288 pass yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT). But it was tough sledding on the ground against SEMU (just 1.9 YPC including sacks), a theme that figures to roll over in Week 1. Purdue returns 7 of their top 16 tacklers from last season and brings in Kevin Kane to call the defense for his second stint with the program (Phil Steele).
In all likelihood, game state will see Indiana State in a deficit and lean heavily on the passing game. BJ Wuest, the Sycamores’ leading receiver in Week 0, did note that SEMO’s Cover 1-heavy scheme did prep ISU’s offense well for what should be another heavy Cover 1 dose at Ross-Ade Stadium on Friday (The Tribune-Star). With a game already under their belt, I can easily see Owens & co. stringing together completions and competent drives against a transfer-heavy Purdue secondary (6 total). But finishing said drives off with 3s and 7s will be the key if the Sycamores want a shot at remaining within the number.
When Purdue has the Ball
There is some optimism for improvement in ‘26 from a rather putrid Boilermaker offense a year ago (122nd in the country in points per game, 101st in yards per play per Pick Six). As mentioned previously, signal caller Browne Jr. returns for his second season in West Lafayette and has moderate draft buzz. Offensive coordinator Josh Henson’s attack plays fast, ranking 15th of all Power 4 teams in seconds per play last season (Pick Six). That high tempo, run-first philosophy should sustain in 2026, especially on Friday night in the 90-degree heat with Purdue at a supreme athlete and size advantage. Anticipate a heavy dose of Fame Ijeboi (incredible name) on early downs, setting up favorable spots for Brown to pass downfield in play action.
Coach Curt Mallory’s ISU stopping unit put in an adequate effort in their narrow Week 0 defeat, but forced only one sack and provided little resistance to SEMO’s Braylen Ragland (145.3 QB rating). This is clearly a step up in competition, and the Sycamores can truly only rely on turnovers (Purdue was -12 in turnover diff. last year) to keep a 40 or 50-spot off the scoreboard.
Best Bet: Over 55.5 (-112)
Brown Jr. should display more confidence and command of the offense in year 2 of Henson’s system. It would not be surprising if Purdue covered this number on their own. And even if they don’t, I envision some offensive success for Indiana State, even if it comes with starters remaining in the game late against Boilermaker backups.
