Friday’s series opener between the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals was delayed because of severe weather near Nationals Park. The game originally carried a 6:45 p.m. ET start time. Washington later announced that first pitch is now scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET. No postponement has been announced.
The delay comes as thunderstorms move through the Washington area during the opening window. The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the District through 9 p.m. ET. Thunderstorms remain possible around 7 p.m., although conditions could improve during the following hour. Another interruption remains possible if a second storm reaches the ballpark later Friday.
Cincinnati is expected to use Chase Petty as an opener following his return from the injured list. Washington will counter with Cade Cavalli, who enters 8-5 with a 3.52 ERA. Both pitchers remain scheduled to work despite the abbreviated delay.
The Reds enter Friday on a four-game winning streak and have gone 13-6 since the All-Star break. Washington has lost eight of nine and returns home following a difficult road trip. The teams will begin a three-game weekend series once the field is cleared for play.
