The PGA TOUR regular season concludes this week with the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club (par 70, 7,131 yards, Bermuda greens) in Greensboro, North Carolina. Sedgefield was designed by Donald Ross and has hosted the Wyndham Championship since 2008. Cameron Young won this event last year by six shots, which was his first win on the PGA TOUR. There will be 145 players competing this week and the first round of the Wyndham Championship gets underway Thursday morning at 6:50 AM EST.
Below, I have featured two of my favorite Round 1 bets for the Wyndham Championship on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Patrick Fishburn for an end of round top-20 finish including ties (+390)
Fishburn finished an average T-50 at the Rocket Classic last week, but he was red-hot to begin this event, posting a 6-under 64 at Detroit Golf Club on Thursday, putting him T-4 on the leaderboard following the first round. Fishburn has been one of the best early scorers on the PGA TOUR this season, ranking third in first round scoring average, and he has impressively finished T-16 or better following the first round in five of his last eight starts.
Fishburn finished T-8 at Sedgefield last season and he sat T-19 after the first round, thanks to a 4-under 66 on Thursday. Fishburn has shot 66 or better in 3-of-6 rounds at Sedgefield and he ranks 14th in this field in strokes gained per round at Ross courses.
Fishburn getting off to another strong start at Sedgefield is realistic and he is an awesome bet for a first round top-20 finish at these long +390 odds.
Justin Thomas O 67.5 Round 1 Score (-125)
Thomas has had a mediocre season by his standards, finishing inside the top-five once in 14 starts. The Alabama product is coming off a T-50 at the Genesis Scottish Open and a T-65 at the Open Championship.
Thomas has struggled mightily with his irons this season, ranking 103rd in SG APP and while he will likely perform better back in America this week, him opening the Wyndham Championship with a 67 or lower feels unlikely.
At Sedgefield, Thomas has finished T-78, T-56, MC and T-12, and he has shot 68 or worse in 9-of-14 rounds. Thomas also has been terrible in the first round this season. The veteran owns a first round scoring average of 71.0 – which ranks 135th of 159 golfers – and he has shot 68 or worse in the first round of all but one of his 14 starts.
