Milwaukee Brewers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates prediction, pick for MLB on Monday 8/03/26

Trade Deadline day opens a four-game NL Central series between clubs moving in opposite directions. Milwaukee enters 69-42 after going 10-5 since the All-Star break. Pittsburgh sits 56-57 after dropping seven of its last nine. The Pirates absorbed a 10-2 loss Sunday, while Milwaukee finished its trip with a 3-0 defeat. The Brewers created 10 baserunners but went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Pittsburgh has still won five of six meetings this season, including three games decided by one run. The Pirates already strengthened their bullpen by acquiring former All-Star closer Camilo Doval. Milwaukee reaches the deadline atop the division, yet its injured rotation still leaves room for another move. Jake Bauers enters on an eight-game hitting streak despite playing through swelling around his fractured right big toe. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Brewers vs. Pirates prediction, preview

Bubba Chandler’s 3-8 record, 4.56 ERA, and 1.41 WHIP conceal excellent contact management. He owns a .308 xwOBA, 88.8 mph average exit velocity, 36.8% hard-hit rate, and 6.2% barrel rate. His 4.34 FIP also sits beneath his ERA. Chandler’s problem remains command, with 57 walks against 93 strikeouts across 104⅔ innings. His 98.5 mph four-seamer accounts for nearly half his arsenal, yet its whiff rate remains modest for that velocity. Left-handed hitters have supplied most of his damage, slugging .441 with eight homers. Brandon Sproat carries greater volatility through a 5.05 ERA, 5.19 FIP, 1.39 WHIP, and 17 homers allowed. His contact includes 89.9 mph exit velocity, 43.2% hard hits, 9.0% barrels, and a .389 xwOBA on contact. Sproat’s cutter has allowed a .709 slugging percentage, while his curveball has surrendered a .585 mark.

Milwaukee owns the deeper offense and the cleaner path toward extended innings against Chandler. Brice Turang enters batting .271/.364/.463 with 16 homers, 69 RBI, 61 walks, and 15 steals. His patience can turn Chandler’s command problems into immediate pressure on the bases. Bauers is batting .270/.373/.504 with 20 homers and 64 RBI. He went 7-for-18 with two homers during Milwaukee’s California trip. William Contreras adds a .270 average and a 15.7% strikeout rate behind them. Jackson Chourio reached three times Sunday and continues supplying speed near the top. Pittsburgh’s best answer is Brandon Lowe, who owns 23 homers, 71 RBI, and a slugging percentage near .490. Esmerlyn Valdez produced 10 homers, 30 RBI, and a .645 slugging percentage across his last 30 games. However, Valdez enters 2-for-22 across his last seven.

Chandler’s batted-ball profile creates legitimate resistance against Milwaukee’s run line. His barrel rate sits three percentage points below the major-league average. Hitters have also produced only a .323 expected wOBA when making contact. Milwaukee relies upon walks, movement, and sustained innings because its home-run production remains limited. That structure works against Chandler’s command, although one ground ball can erase traffic quickly. Sproat has shown flashes of improvement, posting a 3.86 ERA across his last seven starts. He still walked 16 hitters over 32⅔ innings during that stretch. His last three outings produced eight earned runs, nine walks, and 12 strikeouts across 13⅔ innings. Pittsburgh can attack those free passes with Lowe, Nick Gonzales, Bryan Reynolds, and Valdez. The bottom of its order remains vulnerable without Oneil Cruz, leaving Sproat several recovery pockets.

Pirates vs. Brewers pick, best bet

The bullpen layer favors Milwaukee, although Pittsburgh’s recent usage strengthens the scoring case. Pirates relievers own a 4.34 ERA, ranking 22nd in baseball. Pittsburgh required several arms during Sunday’s blowout, and Doval surrendered a homer during his team debut. Gregory Soto and Mason Montgomery remain useful left-handed options, but the middle bridge looks less stable. Milwaukee’s leverage group enters considerably fresher. Trevor Megill owns a 2.83 ERA and 1.54 FIP, while DL Hall carries a 2.25 ERA. Abner Uribe and Aaron Ashby give Pat Murphy additional swing-and-miss options. Hall handled Milwaukee’s only relief inning Sunday, leaving the primary late-game arms rested. Milwaukee should see clear conditions around 73 degrees at first pitch, falling toward 68 during the middle innings. The roof decision remains unannounced, though weather should permit an open configuration.

Milwaukee deserves favoritism, yet -150 asks too much against Chandler’s contact suppression and high-end velocity. The Brewers’ +139 run line also requires separation against a pitcher who rarely allows barrels. Over 8.5 at -102 better captures both starters’ recurring weaknesses. Chandler’s walks meet a Milwaukee lineup carrying a .337 on-base percentage and several dangerous left-handed hitters. Sproat’s hittable cutter, vulnerable curveball, and inconsistent command give Pittsburgh several early scoring paths. The Pirates’ depleted bullpen creates further upside once Chandler exits. Milwaukee’s relief strength provides the primary resistance, although the total can reach nine before its best arms control the late innings. Both starters can miss bats, but neither consistently avoids deep counts and stressful traffic. A 5-4 game fits their current profiles, lineup strengths, and bullpen conditions.

Best bet: Over 8.5 (-102), playable through -110

Projected score: Brewers 5, Pirates 4

Best bet: Brewers vs. Pirates o8.5 total runs (+100)
