Sunday’s game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cleveland Guardians entered a rain delay amid a benches-clearing confrontation. Players and coaches formed a large scrum near home plate as the grounds crew prepared the field.
Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt appeared particularly upset. The confrontation may have stemmed from Tim Tawa’s bunt attempt against Gavin Williams during Arizona’s sixth inning.
Williams carried a no-hitter while Cleveland held a 5-0 lead. Tawa took a called strike, bunted Williams’ next pitch foul, then lined an 0-2 sweeper into right field. The single ended Williams’ no-hit bid after five complete innings.
Arizona continued threatening before the stoppage. Ildemaro Vargas reached second on Brayan Rocchio’s throwing error, while Corbin Carroll drew a two-out walk. Williams also threw a wild pitch, leaving runners at the corners for Geraldo Perdomo.
Rain then intensified, and both teams moved toward the plate during the argument. No punches or immediate ejections were reported before the teams separated. The delay officially began around 3:18 p.m. ET.
No restart time has been announced. Cleveland completed five innings before the stoppage, giving the game regulation status. The Guardians could receive a 5-0 victory if weather prevents play from resuming.
Williams has struck out 10, walked one, and allowed one hit across 5⅔ scoreless innings. He threw 60 of 89 pitches for strikes and retired Arizona’s first 15 hitters before Tawa’s single.
Cleveland built its advantage against Merrill Kelly. Patrick Bailey homered, Chase DeLauter collected three RBI, and Kyle Manzardo added an RBI single. Kelly allowed eight hits, five earned runs, four walks, and one homer across five innings.
The game began under overcast skies with an 81-degree temperature and wind blowing inward from right field. Thunderstorms remained in the afternoon forecast, with precipitation chances increasing throughout the delay.
