It is a loaded day in MLB with all 30 teams in action, including a doubleheader between the Mets and Braves. With first pitch scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET, the Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays will be facing off.
This is the second matchup of the series between these two teams. The Rangers produced a 4-1 victory in the series opener yesterday, and MacKenzie Gore and Casey Legumina will take the ball for their respective squads tonight.
Looking at the odds, the Rays enter as -149 favorites on the moneyline, and Tampa Bay holds +149 odds on the run line on DraftKings Sportsbook. The Rangers hold +123 odds of winning outright, with the run total set at 7.5.
Rangers at Rays prediction, preview
The Texas Rangers enter with a 55-52 record on the season, sitting in the top spot in the American League West. They opened up the series with the 4-1 victory yesterday, and took three of four against the Seattle Mariners in the series before this. On the season, the Rangers have gone 52-55 to the run line, and the game total is 56-45-6 to the over.
MacKenzie Gore will take the mound for the Rangers today, marking his 23rd start of the season. The former All-Star enters with a 6-8 record, a 4.82 ERA, a 1.305 WHIP, 14 home runs allowed, and 127 strikeouts tallied across 115.2 innings pitched. Gore has only faced this Rays lineup in 16 at-bats in his career, but has allowed six hits in these opportunities.
Looking at the production at the plate, the Rangers are slashing a collective .248/.320/.407 with a .727 OPS. They rank 14th in hits, 21st in runs, 17th in home runs, and 14th in strikeouts. Brandon Nimmo and Josh Jung are tied for a team-high 104 hits, although Jung is currently on the 10-day IL. Jake Burger and Joc Pederson are tied for a team-high 19 home runs, and combined for 104 RBI on the season. Ezequiel Duran adds 12 home runs and 57 RBI, while Wyatt Langford has tallied 12 homers of his own.
The Tampa Bay Rays are off to a 62-44 start to the season, which leads the American League East. This is also tied for the third-best record in baseball. Tampa Bay dropped the previous matchup to this Rangers team, but swept the Guardians before this and have won six of their last seven. On the season, the Rays have gone 62-44 to the run line, and the game total is 47-54-5 to the over.
Casey Legumina will be making his 27th appearance of the season, but just his fourth start of the year. Across his 31.2 innings pitched, Legumina offers a 3.69 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP, four home runs allowed, and 22 strikeouts tallied. He has not thrown more than 2.1 innings in any game this season, so expect the bullpen to get plenty of work today. The 29-year-old has faced this Rangers’ lineup in 10 at-bats in his career and has allowed five hits in these opportunities.
The Rays are slashing a collective .260/.332/.402 with a .733 OPS on the season. Tampa Bay ranks sixth in the MLB in hits, 15th in runs, 26th in home runs, and has the fewest strikeouts in the league. Yandy Diaz leads the team with 119 hits, along with 14 home runs and 61 RBI. Junior Caminero is not far behind, with 115 hits, a team-high 29 home runs, and 64 RBI. Jonathan Aranda and Chandler Simpson each have tallied at least108 hits of their own, with Aranda adding 14 home runs and a team-high 65 RBI. Cedrick Mullins, Nick Fortes, and Taylor Walls also play notable roles.
Rangers at Rays pick, best bet
The Rangers picked up a 4-1 win in yesterday’s matchup in which the Rays were limited to just five total hits. Texas built a 2-0 lead on a pair of sacrifice flies and was able to cruise to a victory from there on the back of its bullpen.
But expect something different in Game 2 of this series in a favorable bounce-back spot for Tampa Bay. MacKenzie Gore has greatly struggled of late. The former Nationals’ standout enters today’s matchup having allowed three or more earned runs in five of his last six starts, including five or more in three of these. Gore is posting a 5.80 ERA across his past 10 starts, allowing eight home runs in this stretch, and he has a 6.02 ERA on the road in 2026. Opponents are batting .261 with a .777 OPS against Gore in road games, as well.
Even with this being a bullpen game for the Rays, their offense shouldn’t be limited in the same way it was yesterday. Tampa Bay had won six of its past seven before that disappointing result, and its bullpen has been one of the best in the league since the All-Star break. Tampa Bay has also gone 38-16 when playing at home this season.
Expect Tampa Bay to add to Gore’s struggles and for his troubles on the road to show face once again. Back the Rays to score runs at a rate the Rangers cannot match, and I am taking the -1.5 run line tonight.
