How did they get here? Let’s rewind the clock to the 2024 European Championship. Spain beat England 2-1 in the final with goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal. The Spanish then set their sights on the World Cup. Prior to 2026, they had one World Cup triumph in their history, and that was in 2010, beating the Netherlands 1-0 in extra time. 2026 went exactly the same way, beating Argentina 1-0 with the winning goal coming in extra time. Andres Iniesta and Ferran Torres both have their names etched in Spanish history.
Let’s take a look at Spain’s entire journey in the 2026 FIFA World Cup on their way to winning their second World Cup in their history. They were drawn into Group H alongside Cape Verde, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia. Their first match was the first and last disappointment of the World Cup. They drew 0-0 with Cape Verde, but went on to win every match from there. Their second game was a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia; their third was a 1-0 win over Uruguay on their way to winning the group. From there, they faced Austria in the Round of 32, which was a comfortable 3-0 win. In the Round of 16 it was less comfortable, beating Portugal 1-0 with a late goal from Mikel Merino proving the difference. In the quarter-finals it was the same story, as Mikel Merino once again came off the bench to get a late winner in a 2-1 victory. In the semi-final they overcame all the odds to beat the favorites France 2-0. It wasn’t a fluke, Spain fully outplayed the French and deserved the victory. In the final, they faced the final boss, beating the defending champions Argentina. It was a one-sided affair, but Ferran Torres finally gave Spain what they deserved in extra time to get the 1-0 victory. After all of that, Spain are once again the champions of the world.
This Spanish team is full of young talent, and they will be looking to once again go all the way in 2030.
