How Much Money Did Young Washington Make at the Box Office This Weekend?

The summer box office has been chock full of box office sensations and bombs alike, from Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and Obsession to Supergirl and Backrooms. Amid a surge of family films like Toy Story 5 and Minions & Monsters, though, Angel Studios released Young Washington on Fourth of July weekend. The George Washington biopic hit theaters nationwide on July 3 – the same window that the same studio slotted Sound of Freedom into back in 2023. So how did the historical drama perform on America’s 250th birthday?

Here is a breakdown of how Young Washington performed at the box office this past weekend:

Young Washington Box Office

Young Washington made $19.4 million at the box office between July 3 and July 5. For comparison, Sound of Freedom opened to $19.7 million over the same weekend three years ago. Angel Studios also released a pair of biblical animated films in 2025 – King of Kings and David – which grossed $19.4 million and $22.0 million, respectively, on their opening weekends. Earlier this year, the studio’s Solo Mio opened to $7.0 million.

There weren’t any Thursday preview numbers reported on Young Washington, which made $7.6 million on Friday. Young Washington is on track for the largest opening by a historical war movie in the 2020s. That would put it above Napoleon‘s $20.6 million, The Woman King‘s $19.1 million, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare‘s $8.9 million, Devotion‘s $5.9 million and Nuremburg‘s $3.8 million.

Looking beyond the United States and Canada, there aren’t overseas numbers for Young Washington. Given its subject matter, and distribution model, it isn’t shocking that the film is relying so heavily on North American audiences. Sound of Freedom remains the studio’s biggest box office hit at $250.6 million globally, followed by David at $87.9 million, King of Kings at $83.6 million and Solo Mio at $26.4 million. All four of those films made at least 72% of their gross profits from the domestic box office.
