Detroit comes into Progressive Field with a losing record and the better current pulse. The Tigers are still 29-40, while Cleveland sits 37-33, but June has changed the temperature. Detroit has won seven of nine and just closed Minnesota with an 11-0 rout built around six homers. Cleveland arrives with four straight losses after getting swept at home by the Yankees. That contrast gives this AL Central opener a strange shape. The Guardians own the steadier season, home field, and Tanner Bibee’s history in this matchup. Detroit owns the hotter offense, a healthier top half, and a clubhouse getting Tarik Skubal back Saturday. This is the type of matchup where reputation can outrun the current baseball. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Cleveland Guardians and the Detroit Tigers.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Guardians vs. Tigers prediction, preview
Bibee’s case starts with what he has done to Detroit. Since the start of 2025, he is 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 26 strikeouts across 27 innings against the Tigers. He also just threw eight scoreless against Texas, allowing three hits and two walks. The hesitation comes from the shape beneath that line. Bibee struck out only three Rangers, and his 2026 profile still carries a 4.09 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 63 strikeouts, 24 walks, and 13 homers allowed in 77 innings. Statcast adds a .333 xwOBA allowed, 61.6% air-ball rate, and 9.6% barrel rate. His cutter and four-seamer make up nearly half his usage, and that puts several Detroit left-handed bats into the right damage lanes.
Jack Flaherty is not clean enough to make this comfortable. His season line is 1-7 with a 5.31 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 77 strikeouts, 33 walks, and eight homers allowed in 62.2 innings. The June version has looked sharper, though, with three earned runs and 13 strikeouts across 10 innings. That gives Detroit a workable starter baseline instead of a pure survival script. The contact risk still lingers. Flaherty has allowed a 91.3 mph average exit velocity, 48.3% hard contact, .334 xwOBA, 9.0% barrels, and an 11.3% walk rate. Cleveland can absolutely get him if José Ramírez and Kyle Manzardo turn early fastball counts into crooked-number pressure.
Detroit has the louder individual damage bats if the projected lineup holds. Dillon Dingler owns a .371 wOBA, .401 xwOBA, 90.9 mph average exit velocity, 52% hard-hit rate, and 13.6% barrel rate. Riley Greene adds a .378 wOBA, .362 xwOBA, 91.4 mph average exit velocity, 50.9% hard contact, and 13.5% barrels. Kerry Carpenter gives Bibee another left-handed mistake punisher, while Spencer Torkelson keeps the middle order from becoming too left-handed. Cleveland’s best answers are Ramírez, Manzardo, and Chase DeLauter. Ramírez’s .358 xwOBA and 44.1% hard-hit rate still point toward better production, while Manzardo’s 12.1% barrel rate gives Cleveland its cleanest power path. The issue is depth. Travis Bazzana and Steven Kwan help build innings, but Detroit has more top-half bats capable of changing the game with one swing.
Tigers vs. Guardians pick, best bet
The Cleveland counter is credible. Bibee has handled Detroit, Flaherty can lose the zone, and Progressive Field has already seen the Guardians beat this team in tight late-game spots. Cleveland also has the one hitter in Ramírez who can bend a game without needing three teammates to help. That is enough to kill any oversized Detroit position. It is not enough to make Cleveland the sharper side at this number. The Guardians’ offense has been too thin recently, and their best path asks Bibee to repeat matchup dominance while the lineup cashes limited traffic. Detroit’s case is broader. The Tigers can win through Flaherty’s improved strikeout form, a hotter top six, and enough late-game bullpen competence to keep the matchup from flipping after the starters leave.
The context keeps this on the full-game side. Cleveland’s bullpen reputation is better than its recent week, and Daniel Espino’s call-up adds stuff with volatility after 29 strikeouts and 15 walks in 18.2 Triple-A innings. Detroit’s bullpen is not empty, either, and the lineup’s current form gives the Tigers more ways to pressure the middle innings. Weather should not become a fake under angle, with dry upper-70s conditions expected around first pitch. The home-plate umpire was still unposted at last check, which is one reason the first-five under never fully graduated. Both starters allow enough loud contact to make a tight zone dangerous.
Best bet: Tigers ML at +104 if available, playable to +100. Cleveland asks for too much surface trust. Detroit has the better current offense, the livelier damage bats, and the better price.
Projected score: Tigers 5, Guardians 4.
Best bet: Tigers (+105) at Guardians
