Arizona enters Friday with a cleaner pulse after splitting four games against Los Angeles. The D-backs closed that series with a 3-2 walk-off win. Corbin Carroll homered in the eighth, Geraldo Perdomo tied it late, and Ketel Marte ended it immediately. Washington arrives from the opposite direction after Miami swept three straight. The Nationals scored three, three, and one run in those losses. Max Meyer held them to one run and two hits across seven innings Wednesday. Arizona has the better emotional runway, and its offense gets a matchup that fits its best split. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Washington Nationals.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Diamondbacks vs. Nationals prediction, preview
Foster Griffin’s surface line deserves respect, but the matchup is dangerous. He is 6-2 with a 3.76 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 67 innings, 65 strikeouts, and 21 walks. That is a sturdy line for a Washington rotation carrying uneven depth. The damage indicators tell a more complicated story. Griffin has allowed 13 homers, 1.75 HR/9, a 4.89 FIP, and an 18.1% HR/FB rate. His cutter has allowed a .531 slugging percentage. His four-seamer has allowed a .526 slugging percentage. Arizona does not need to beat every pitch. It needs to catch the two offerings already creating lift damage.
The D-backs’ left-handed pitching split is the center of the handicap. Arizona is hitting .279/.334/.451 with a .785 OPS against lefties. The D-backs have 32 doubles, nine triples, 17 homers, 92 RBI, and 58 extra-base hits in that split. They have struck out only 110 times in 657 plate appearances against left-handed pitching. That 16.7% strikeout rate gives them a strong accumulation path against Griffin. Marte has 11 homers and 37 RBI, and he homered twice during the Dodgers series. Carroll owns a .292/.379/.557 season line after a three-hit, two-extra-base game Thursday. Gabriel Moreno and Nolan Arenado give the projected top half more right-handed balance.
Washington still makes the Arizona side uncomfortable. Merrill Kelly is 5-3, but his run-prevention profile remains messy. He owns a 5.06 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 56 hits, 33 strikeouts, 22 walks, and 10 homers allowed over 53.1 innings. His last five starts have been much better, with three earned runs or fewer in each outing. The contact indicators still leave room for damage. Kelly has allowed a .363 wOBA, .407 xwOBA, 44.1% hard-hit rate, 16.4% barrel rate, and 90.5 mph average exit velocity. James Wood has 16 homers and 39 RBI. CJ Abrams is hitting .288 with 12 homers and 47 RBI. Luis García Jr. has a 1.011 OPS over Washington’s last 10 team games against righties.
Nationals vs. Diamondbacks pick, best bet
Chase Field should keep this game matchup-driven instead of weather-driven. The roof is closed, so the 100-degree Phoenix heat should not drive the handicap. The bullpen context still tilts toward Arizona’s scoring path. Washington’s relief group ranks No. 22 by current bullpen snapshot, with 23 innings and a 4.30 ERA over the previous seven days. The Nationals also carry a 4.50 bullpen ERA for the season. Richard Lovelady has worked through a 1.75 WHIP, while Gus Varland sits at 1.55. Cole Henry’s recent homer issues matter behind Griffin, who has already allowed 13 long balls himself. Arizona’s bullpen is in better shape, ranking No. 4 by current snapshot with a 2.30 ERA over 15.2 recent innings. The D-backs also own a 3.89 bullpen ERA across 215.1 season innings. Paul Sewald has converted 15 of 16 save chances, giving Arizona a cleaner late-game spine. That relief edge helps the home side, but Kelly’s .407 xwOBA, 16.4% barrel rate, and 1.46 WHIP keep the moneyline sweaty.
The better angle is Arizona’s run path. The D-backs’ moneyline at -136 is playable, but it asks Kelly to avoid a dangerous Washington top half. Nationals team total over 4.5 at +110 has life, but the Miami series lowered that floor. Full-game over 9 is viable because both starters can give up loud contact. Diamondbacks team total over 4.5 at -110 is cleaner. Arizona owns one of MLB’s best lefty splits, Griffin’s homer profile sits above his ERA, and Washington’s bullpen can extend the scoring window. The D-backs have enough contact, switch-hit balance, and extra-base pressure to reach five runs.
Best bet: Diamondbacks team total over 4.5 (-110).
Projected score: Diamondbacks 6, Nationals 4.
Best bet: Diamondbacks TT o4.5 runs (-110) vs. Nationals
