In a result that came as quite the surprise, the Vegas Golden Knights rolled with the punches to open the 2026 Stanley Cup Final and took down the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1. Vegas’ experience won out as the club rallied from a multi-goal deficit on the road, but the Canes will surely punch back in tonight’s rematch as the pressure builds at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh.

The opening tilt of the Stanley Cup Final was a thriller, eh? Nikolaj Ehlers put the first shot of the game in the back of the net to begin the action, then followed it up with another one to give his team an early 2-0 lead. The front office and fans alike have surely felt vindicated ever since the winger settled into his first season in Carolina after joining the team via free agency this past offseason — after being the prized signing of the entire class, at that. However, early celebrations ended quickly when Vegas stormed back with four goals from four different players. In the final frame, Tomas Hertl sealed the deal with a decisive blow to secure Game 1 for the road side.
Will we get a repeat of a nine-goal game this time around? Game 2 should likely be a much more low-scoring affair, especially since both Frederik Andersen and Carter Hart have put forth impressive playoff runs. However, it wouldn’t necessarily be a surprise if Carolina’s stifling defense suddenly felt threatened by a high-octane offense. The 23 shots on goal from the Golden Knights were the third most the Canes have allowed in 10 games since the start of the second postseason round. Plus, Andersen has faded hard since the Eastern Conference Final began with an .865 SV% — that mark sat at .950 in the first two rounds.
It’s great that the Hurricanes’ offense looked the part of its elite reputation after some quieter nights during this playoff run. Getting the better of Hart — who was incredibly hot between the pipes during the prior series — was an encouraging sign that the Golden Knights’ own defense is still porous at times against quality opponents. Carolina also outshot Vegas 28-23, which was predictable based on how these teams have operated throughout the playoffs. Per Natural Stat Trick, the Canes also saw a 60.67% Corsi rate, largely dominating possession as a whole. That’ll be key in Game 2.
Golden Knights vs. Hurricanes pick, best bet
DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Hurricanes as -162 home favorites to win on the Moneyline tonight, while the Golden Knights come in as a +136 underdog on the road. The game total sits at 5.5 combined goals once again.
Betting splits show 66% of straight bets on Carolina to win, 59% of wagers on the Canes to cover the -1.5 puck line, and 82% on the total’s over.
It seems unlikely that the Hurricanes lose back-to-back games on their home ice, especially after going 29-10-2 there during the regular season to earn the NHL’s best home record. They’ve also gone 6-2 at home in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, for what it’s worth. This was the best team in the Eastern Conference for a reason and they held a multi-goal lead in the series opener prior to Andersen’s collapse. His play may be a little shaky lately, but the players in front of him are also surely motivated to step up and prevent another choke job as we saw on Tuesday.
Personally, over 3.5 goals for the Hurricanes feels like a top betting pick for Game 2. The offense looked the part in the series opener and got the better of a netminder who’s been on his A-game, which bodes well for the rematch tonight. They also won the xGF battle and generated a ton more chances in that outing as well, which should happen again in this one. Take the Carolina attack here and don’t look back.
