Golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested early Friday morning in what appears to be a giant miscommunication and some overreactions. Scheffler was reportedly confused by new traffic patterns near the Valhalla Golf Club in Lexington, Kentucky. After some miscommunications with police officers on the scene, Scheffler was arrested and later charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

Tee times for Round 2 of the 2024 PGA Championship have been delayed an hour and 20 minutes from the incident. Scheffler was initially supposed to tee off around 8:48 a.m. ET, but his new tee time has been pushed to 10:08 a.m. He was released under his own recognizance and is on his way back to the golf course, on schedule to make his tee time.

Scheffler had a solid opening round of the tournament. He finished the day four under, which ended up being only good enough to tie him for 12th place. Heading into the second round, Scheffler trails leader Xander Schauffele (-9) by five strokes. Golf is largely dependent on having a clear mind to stay focused, and we will see if this morning’s incident weighs on Scheffler’s performance in trying to close the gap on Schauffele.
Scheffler began the day with +800 odds of winning the PGA Championship. Sportsbooks must think the morning’s incident will give him fuel to play better, because his odds have increased to +450 at DraftKings Sportsbook. He trails only Schauffele (+240), is tied with Rory McIlroy (+450) and leads Brooks Koepka (+1200) and Collin Morikawa (+1400).
