Background on ‘The Way I Am’

Combs did what is popular in the music industry to pique interest in an upcoming album: drop a single. However, he took it a step further by releasing not just one single, but a handful of hits and visuals to go along with them. Specifically, a music video to accompany the single “I Ain’t No Cowboy,” while also gifting fans an intimate look into a studio recording session.

Consider fans’ interest piqued.

Luke Combs recently joined The Zach Sang Show on YouTube to share a glimpse into his creative process, as well as the sentiment surrounding the album. Combs spoke on how his last album, Fathers & Sons, wasn’t intended to take off as well as it did, but was more so a passion project and therapeutic release tied to his journey through fatherhood. Therefore, his newest album, The Way I Am, is technically five years in the making. Combs explained the contrast between the two projects: how Fathers & Sons was more of an immediate response to his current state and experiences in life, whereas The Way I Am is positioned as a more intentional, fully realized studio project.

For example, another single released off the album — “Sleepless in a Hotel Room” — dates back over five years. Combs explained that the song came together roughly a month before COVID-19 shut down the world. The country star was staying in a hotel in New York the night before an SNL performance and simply couldn’t sleep; he tried to write, read, listen to music, and eventually was inspired by the title “Sleepless in a Hotel Room.” Combs finished the lyrics and keys for the song before February was up, and fast forward to March 2026, the song has found a home on this album.
