After three Signature events in the last four weeks, the PGA TOUR continues its four-week stay in Florida with perhaps the biggest tournament of the year so far. THE PLAYERS Championship is sometimes called the “fifth major” since it carries so much prestige and presents golfers with such a tough challenge. Every year, the event takes place at TPC Sawgrass – THE PLAYERS Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Almost every golf fan knows this venue extremely well and the island green on No. 17 is perhaps the single most recognizable hole on any course in the regular PGA TOUR rotation. Unlike the Signature Events, it’s a full field this week. The field of 123 players will be reduced to the top 65 and ties after Round 2. The course is a volatile, difficult task, and even the best players in the world are not assured of making the cut.
Last year, Rory McIlroy defeated J.J. Spaun in a playoff before each went on to claim a major championship later in the season. Lucas Glover, Tom Hoge, and last week’s winner at Bay Hill, Akshay Bhatia, tied for third.
