The United States enters the 2026 World Baseball Classic as the clear favorites to win Group B. If anyone is going to challenge the Americans, it’ll likely be either Mexico or Great Britain.
These two clubs are set to face off this afternoon, in what should be an entertaining matchup. Mexico comes into this one as the favorites (-1600), thanks primarily to a star-studded lineup. Outfielder Randy Arozarena is no stranger to this stage, having dominated during the 2023 WBC. However, fellow All-Star Jazz Chisholm will be looking to make a statement of his own for the British.
With first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET, both sides should be well-rested going into today’s showdown in Houston. Who will emerge victorious to kick off this epic international tournament? Let’s break down the odds and lines for both sides on the DraftKings Sportsbook.
Mexico vs. Great Britain prediction, preview
As previously mentioned, Mexico’s biggest strength is its lineup. Arozarena is the headliner, especially when considering his past success in this format. During the 2023 WBC, he hit .450 with a homer and nine RBIs over six games. His team lost 6-5 that year in the semifinals against Japan, the eventual champions. Supporting Arozarena on this Mexican offense will be a slew of proven MLB talent. Red Sox star Jarren Duran brings quality contact, speed, and defense to the outfield. Behind the plate, Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk will hit in the middle of the order. Jonathan Aranda, Joey Ortiz, and Luis Urias help form one of the bracket’s premier infields.
If there’s a weakness for Mexico, it’s on the mound. This is a middling at best rotation, without many elite arms. Taking the hill on Friday will be Cubs starter Javier Assad. Through four seasons in the majors, he’s posted a respectable 3.43 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. Even if Assad proves ineffective, the Mexicans won’t panic. That’s due to an elite bullpen, headlined by Andres Munoz. The Mariners closer dominated last season with a 1.73 ERA and 38 saves. Supporting Munoz as setup options will be Texas’ Robert Garcia (2.95 ERA) and Colorado’s Victor Vodnik (3.02 ERA).
Opening things with a victory won’t be easy for an unproven British side. The Union Jack only went 1-3 during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. With that being said, this year could be different. That’s due primarily to Chisholm, arguably the best player on the field this afternoon. The Yankees second baseman was phenomenal last season, slashing .242/.332/.481 with 31 home runs and 31 steals. That latter mark is crucial; he’ll likely need to wreak havoc on the base paths to secure an upset.
Unfortunately for the British, the rest of this lineup remains limited on paper. If anyone other than Jazz can make an impact, it’s Harry Ford. Per MLB.com, the Nationals catcher is the sport’s 71st-best prospect. Decent power and elite on-base skills make the 23-year-old a tough out for opposing pitchers. Elsewhere on this roster, keep an eye out for Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton. In 41 games as a part-timer last season, the third-year pro hit .296 with nine steals. He could serve as an ideal leadoff man hitting in front of Chisholm.
Much like Mexico, Great Britain isn’t well-positioned on the mound. Toeing the slab this afternoon will be Jack Anderson. The 26-year-old has major league experience, albeit not much of it. He’s tallied a career 6.75 ERA over five games pitched. Unlike Mexico, the British don’t offer much out of the bullpen.
Mexico vs. Great Britain pick, best bet
Mexico, given its past WBC success, should be viewed as the favorites here. However, a 5.5-run spread isn’t the most enticing to bet on. Instead, expect both of these offenses to provide some fireworks. The Mexicans should do most of the heavy lifting, with four former All-Stars in the lineup. However, Chisholm and Ford could single-handedly generate two or three runs of their own for the British. It’s also worth mentioning that Mexico has upcoming games this weekend vs. Brazil and the USA. Saving some of the team’s top bullpen arms might make sense. If that occurs, there should be plenty of scoring in this one.
