This video lasted just 72 seconds, but this isn’t quite a fair comparison, as he was not singing in this video, just playing on the piano. It should also be noted that he pitched a specific demo to Roc Nation for this opportunity. His music catalogue has both slow and fast-paced hits, which also complicates the outlook.
Dating back to 2007, only eight of the 10 national anthem performances have gone under the line. Going back to 1990, the fastest Super Bowl performance was set by Aaron Neville at 85 seconds. The slowest performance came in 1990 by Alicia Keys, who stretched it out for 156 seconds. Since 1990, 21 of the 35 performances have remained under two minutes.
Puth is an extremely accomplished artist who has an impressive resume already. But, in contrast to some of the other artists who have filled this role, Puth still has some larger goals to accomplish. This is not a situation where an artist is at the end of their career and taking a bit of a victory lap to be celebrated.
